Former NAACP leader blasts Jackson and Sharpton as 'race hustlers'

Rev. Bryant says black-on-black violence is an epidemic

A former leader of the NAACP is blasting Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for what he calls "exploiting" the tragic death of Trayvon Martin. Rev. C.L. Bryant told the Daily Caller on Monday that "His family should be outraged."

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Bryant is a conservative and a pastor who headed the Garland, Texas chapter of the NAACP. Bryant called Sharpton and Jackson, "race hustlers" and accused them of "acting as though they are buzzards circling the carcass of this young boy."

Controversy has exploded just a month after George Zimmerman, who is being described in the media as a "neighborhood watch captain" shot and killed Trayvor Martin, in what Zimmerman claims was an act of self-defense.

Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime thanks to Florida law which permits the use of lethal force if a person is reasonably threatened.

Recent developments are suggesting that Martin may have struggled with Zimmerman and police say that Zimmerman did sustain injuries.

The case has inflamed national passions with the majority of Americans via petitions and polls speaking out in favor of Zimmerman's arrest, which has not yet happened. Local police say they have no grounds (yet)on which to arrest Zimmerman.

Meanwhile, as the public firestorm continues public figures are chiming in across the country. Jackson recently said that the killing shows how "blacks are under attack" and adding, the "targeting, arresting, convicting blacks and ultimately killing us is big business."

Bryant says the real epidemic is black-on-black violence, rather than white-on-black. "The epidemic is truly black-on-black crime," Bryant told the Daily Caller. "The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men."

Bryant called upon civil rights leaders to address this issue instead. He asked, "Why not be angry about the wholesale murder that goes on in the streets of Newark and Chicago? Why isn't somebody angry about that six-year-old girl who was killed on her steps last weekend in a cross fire when two gang members in Chicago start shooting at each other? Why is there no outrage about that?"

While famous personalities weighs in on this controversial issue, one must have faith that justice will ultimately be done. In April, a Florida grand jury will investigate the incident, and already the FBI, with its highly trained professionals and sophisticated equipment is also conducting a detailed investigation.

No person can do evil to another and expect to escape justice forever. In the meantime, it is not for us to judge based on hearsay, rumor, and the musings of politicos. Rather, we must keep the faith and ensure we do justice in our daily lives - otherwise we will have learned nothing from this very human tragedy.

Mr. Burford, the serious inaccuracies in your post invalidate the points you were attempting to make.

First, George Bush received 47.87% of the popular vote, and Gore received 48.38%. Regardless, that is a minor quibble that is somewhat tangential to your main argument.

You then use your Bush analogy to attribute an opportunistic motive to the actions of the two reverends. You accused them of solidifying their power with the "NAACP." Ben Jealous, is doing a fine job of trying to resurrect this somewhat moribund organization, but I assure you that the two reverends are not trying to raise their stature in this organization. This is 2012, not 1954. The NAACP has had very little impact on the national debate for decades. In fact, Rev Sharpton, as a host on MSNBC, has a much stronger power base than he could ever hope to obtain with the NAACP.

But my biggest problem is your statement about letting the police do their job. Unfortunately, that is the biggest problem with the case. The police have refused to do their job. With each passing day we get a new revelation that highlights how the police were either ineffective, or incompetent at doing their job. Even worst, now that public attention is being shed on the case, it looks increasingly like the police are trying to sweep this case under the rug. The chief investigator initially wanted to indict Zimmerman for manslaughter. He was overruled by his superiors. Authorities made no effort to locate and contact Trayvon's family for several days after his killing. Authorities are now claiming that Trayvon was a drug user and beat up Zimmerman and broke his nose. Yet, a recently acquired photo of the police taking Zimmerman to the station after the killing, show Zimmerman in no apparent distress with no visible signs of fighting for his life.

Thus, I would love to see the police do their work. I, too, am distressed by this media circus that now surrounds this case. However, the facts of the case indicate quite clearly that without pressure, the police were not going to do their job in this case. Given these circumstances, the involvement of the two reverends is not only welcome, but necessary.

George Bush need something to solidify his presidency after the 2000 election. He received no clear mandate with fifty-four percent of the vote. Then come Osama bin Laden and 9-11.This was the rallying point the brought the nation behind him as president. In a similar vain Rev Jackson and Rep Sharpton need something to solidify their power position with the NAACP. This does not mean that predudice does not exist. It seems clear that this young mans death is a tradgedy, but the police need to do their job. O J Simpson and Casey Anthony were declared innocent by the courts. Police work is the basis of any trial. Please let them do their job and not grand stand the process into the sideshow that resulted in the above cases. We do not need another side show. We need justice. God help the guilty and let their be justice for the innocent.
