Pro-Life Victory: Susan B. Komen for the Cure Defunds Planned Parenthood

Susan G. Komen for the Cure does wonderful work. They should be commended for their decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood

When Planned Parenthood receives a grant or a subsidy, it may argue that it uses that particular money for a purpose other than the taking of innocent life, but the argument is a ruse. The very fact that the money came in allows other funds to be used for providing abortions. It is a deadly shell game. Planned Parenthood is built on a lie. Komen for the Cure has done what is right.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure does wonderful work. They should be commended for their decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online) - The media reports were everywhere. The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation - which does wonderful work for women who suffer with breast cancer - will no longer fund Planned Parenthood, the Nation's largest provider of abortions.

Komen gave over half a million dollars to Planned Parenthood this year alone. The money was supposed to be used for the noble purpose of breast cancer screening and breast health services.

Planned Parenthood cried foul. They blamed the decision by the Susan B Komen Foundation on "anti-abortion activists". In other words, people like us. The ones who accept the truth that the child in the womb is our neighbor. People who reject the profane idea that killing our first neighbors can ever be a "right" since it is always wrong to take innocent human life.

The spokeswoman for Komen indicated that the Charity has an organizational policy that it cannot give grants to organizations which are under investigation by local, state or federal authorities. That means Planned Parenthood. It is the subject of a Congressional investigation for using tax payer funds for abortion services.

Every organization which receives recognition of tax exemption from the IRS under Section 501 c 3 has to file a Form 990. Planned Parenthood is recognized as a non-profit organization and pays no taxes. In addition, contributions made to it are tax deductible. To see the magnitude of the amount of grants and money which this organization receives, you can review their 2009 Form 990 tax filing here.

In 2010, Planned Parenthood performed or funded nearly 330,000 abortions. That means that 330,000 of our neighbors are dead as a result of money given to this organization.

On Wednesday June 16, 2010 Pro-Life elected Representatives and Leaders held a press Conference where they released an audit report from the Government Accountability Office. The Audit was requested by 31 lawmakers who wanted to know how many Federal Tax dollars have been given to groups which advocate for the killing of children in the womb by intentional abortion.

The results were staggering. Taxpayers have given these groups over 1 billion dollars over the period of 2002 - 2009, through Federal funding.

Here are the groups which promote abortion or provide abortion: Advocates for Youth,  $8.7 million (2002-2009); the Guttmacher Institute, $12.7 million (2002-2008); International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), $93.8 million (2002-2009); Planned Parenthood Federation of America, $657.1 million (2002-2008); Population Council of the United States, $284.3 million (2002-2008); Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), $1.6 million (2002-2009).

These figures do not include additional State and Federal funding. The GAO report disclosed that its own Audit report "may understate the actual amount of federal funds the selected organizations and their affiliates spent."  This is huge business, this promotion of the profane notion that taking the life of a child in the womb is a matter of "reproductive health".

I can anticipate the uproar in the camp of those who oppose the Right to Life of our youngest neighbors. I have heard it all before. The most common effort to justify the funding of this nefarious organization goes something like this, "Not all of the funds go to abortion". However, one of the first things a law student learns in Law School is something which should be obvious, money is fungible. In other words, it is interchangeable.

So, when an organization like Planned Parenthood receives a grant,or a subsidy, it may argue that it uses that particular money for a purpose other than the taking of innocent life, but the argument is a ruse. The very fact that the money came in allows other funds to be used for providing abortions. It is a deadly shell game.

Planned Parenthood is built on a lie. They dress themselves up as a "Health Care Provider" and include the taking of the lives of innocent children in the womb as a "service" under their offering of "reproductive services".

They have insinuated themselves into the global delivery of "medical services" and receive massive government funding as this report confirms. Included in these purported "medical services"  is  the killing of children in the womb through intentional abortion.

In the introduction to their glossy 2007-2008 annual report they claimed, "Planned Parenthood is the leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider, with 93 years under our belt. And in the near future, we will play a unique role in helping to shape the health agenda for the new administration."

Vance, notice how you have to say "hopefully" the next GOP leader will pull the funding. What I would hope the next leader focuses is on is real legislation to over turn Roe v Wade. I'm sick of the lip service. If Santorum is elected and at the end of his term we still have it, then we REALLY have to re-think how serious are politicians are about this.

This was a short lived victory because they back tracked on their decision not to fund Planned Parenthood. They caved into pressure from the anti-Christ Marxist Democrat Party and Liberal Establishment who were crying foul. Hopefully the new GOP President will pull the funds next year. Let anti-Christ George Soros use his billions of dollars to fund PP.

    T. Dis - The amount of grant money given to PP by Komen is approximately $700,000 per year, to fewer than 20 PP clinics nationwide that provide mammograms/breast exams. PP's fundraising and PR expenses total more than 100 MILLION DOLLARS a year. So if women actually had died as a result of Komen not funding PP, it would have been PP's fault for not diverting a relatively small amount of funding in order to provide those same services. This is NOT about saving women's lives - this is about PP trying to retain legitimacy in the face of numerous instances in which PP staff have aided and abetted child abusers and sex traffickers. The fact is, women would not have died. I guarantee you, in each of the fewer-than-20 communities in which PP provides mammograms with Komen funds, there are hospitals, mobile mammography programs, and/or public health clinics that could do the same, given the same funding.

John, there is no such thing as an "American Catholic", because there is no such thing as the "American Catholic Church". I am ROMAN Catholic. Period.

John: If I take to heart your post and try to understand what current trends of thinking should be for "Modern Catholics",then let me get this straight. American Catholics are "Mid-Evil" because contraception should be practiced as universally acceptable by all. Gay Marriage is "The THING" so get with it Man. Gay weddings? Go for it! Abortion it is NOT THAT BAD,"Woman's Rights" and all,so thats cool. God? He is what ever you want Him to be as He certainly would't be behind the times,God is really COOL. The Pope should wear T-Shirts and Dungarees to Mass and wear Hippie Beads, instead of that archaic cross thing, around his neck and all those funny mid-evil clothes. There should be hand holding and hand slappings,as well as high 5's given by all after every prayer,so that we can all have a greater sense of community with each other at Mass. Only God is my judge! So no one should ever criticize anyone. There is no HELL or the devil. The 10 Commandments are really the 10 suggestions. The Eucharist? Why not use Cool aide and Norwegian flat bread, french bread with butter would be really current,or with grape jelly on top of the bread, instead of a cool aide substitute for wine, even. Whats the difference? Don't forget the "Hard Rock Music" instead of those mid-evil lullabies, for liturgical tunes at Mass. You know what John! The trouble with the people of today is that to them there is no difference,as it is INDIFFERENCE,that is the "NEW SECULAR RELIGION OF THESE TIMES". To have no sense of tradition is to murder God and to completely forget the sacrifices of our ancestors. Sorry! That is my mid-evil side showing itself as a thought, forgive me,we really should be perpetual adolescents forever, thats really COOL and WITH IT! YEAH!

Theresa I agree, but that begs a different question, then why wouldn't have Komen done that in the first place? Why is so much of this free healthcare being left to Planned Parenthood? I honestly believe that a lot of providers really do not want to deal with the indigent.

Rob, Planned Parenthood is primarily focused on abortions. And, again, Komen could have given the $$ to other healthcare providers who would provide mammograms, etc., for poor women, rather than to an organization that is the largest abortion provider in the country. As Deacon Fournier observed, the anti-life establishment (media, politicians, etc...) and people for the "culture of death" have won the day. But "God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap...." (Gal 6:7-8)

Teresa, I agree with you. But Planned Parenthood has done something very ingenious. The truth is that they do provide some legitimate health care services. They have set themselves up to have their cake and eat it too. And so long as this country ignores the level of uninsured organizations like Planned Parenthood will flourish. I have heard story after story from women who say that this was the only place they could get pap smears etc at a cost they could afford since they are unable to purchase insurance, lost their job or their employer didn't provide benefits. I actually did some calling around. There was only one place that offered free pap smears and they had a six month wait as they provided services only once a month. And I live in a city with almost 600,000 people! We all pray for a day when this culture recognizes it's error and stops this murderous practice. We all pray for a day when organizations like planned parenthood do not have to exists. But in my opinion, so long as we have millions of uninsured who will utilize these services, they are always going to make the case for their services. And obviously we can't rely on our politicians to do anything. So if we really want to cut them off at the knees, we ensure that women can get all of these services at a physician's office, hospital or other venue. But if we as a nation think that providing these services is too big government or infringes on our freedom, then organizations like planned parenthood will continue to provide as they are willing to serve a segment of the population that our government, healthcare system and citizens are ignoring. While this strategy is no different than an insurgent hiding in civilian neighborhoods, it is effective as we've just seen.

It is clear, and has always been clear, that the thinking of Catholics in the United States and of the Catholic Church in the United States is decades behind the times, and decades behind the thinking of Catholics in the advanced nations of the world. American Catholics are stuck in the 1950s and are far removed from the 21st century, as are most Americans. Once the US finally enters the 21st century, something like this will be not controversial at all.

Catholics in advanced nations support birth control, gay marriage, and universal health care. American Catholics demonstrate what a backward nation the United States.

@T Dis and Joseph- Dear "comfortably numbs"...What you don't know about women is ALOT! All rise for "judge-mentals!" It has never been about "political" agenda's for those who defend the culture of life. But it has always been about politics and dead babies and destroyed lives and families for the pro-choice, pro-aborts. "The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it and a lie is a lie even if everyone believes it" Go drink the "Koolaid of the pro-aborts" and continue with your hazy-eyes view of reality. The pro-lifers are not to early for celebration, actually, we are right on time! Checks can and will be stopped!

If Planned Parenthood gets more money for diagnosing cancer for women, that means that they don't have to take as much money away from their much, much larger abortion business to LURE more women into it through the breast cancer diagnosis services they offer. (We know enough about Planned Parenthood's "tricks of the trade.") There are plenty of places where "poor women" can go besides "Planned Parenthood" to get services for breast cancer diagnosis (mammograms, etc.).....Various providers take Medicaid and/or even provide free services themselves. Catholic Charities and many doctors know where to refer women--other than to abortion clinics; even Komen could have given their funding to these and other non-abortion women's healthcare services providers. Those of you so "for" Planned Parenthood: we are not so easily fooled! And please, let's not make this a merely "political" matter--This is a significant matter of morality, based on God's Law--not man's! This is what happens when you remove the Ten Commandments (the iteration of the Natural Law that binds all of us--like it or not) from the fundamental code of a society. Our Founding Fathers would be horrified at what we've come up with in our modern ways. But, we are seeing the results..., and if we don't change course on the downward spiral we're on, we'll see our own self-destruction "soon and very soon!" Dare I say: "mark my words!?!"
