Stand Up and Pray: The Blaspheming of the Sacred Must End. Time for Prayer!

This 'Queer Rosary' with its 'Relational Mysteries' is blasphemy against our Blessed Mother and the holy rosary.

Mary is a one-direction compass that never fails… she is simply incapable of pointing anywhere but to her Divine Son. Her eyes are fixed on Him, and she lifts our eyes to Him as well. She is so firmly anchored in the perfect will of God that to love her can only result in deeper devotion to Christ.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Catholic Online) - I don’t know about you, but I don’t appreciate people insulting my mother. I’m willing to bet that Jesus feels the same way.

When I saw the story last week out of Berkeley, CA and I read the words “Queering the Rosary” I immediately felt my blood begin to boil. Just retyping that degrading phrase makes me cringe. Like so many of you, I treasure our Blessed Mother and I love her deeply. The more I contemplate her life, her heart, her obedience to God, her humility (I could go on and on and on) the more I understand how irreplaceable she is in the Christian life and how lost we might be without her prayers for us. She is a one-direction compass that never fails… she is simply incapable of pointing anywhere but to her Divine Son. Her eyes are fixed on Him, and she lifts our eyes to Him as well. She is so firmly anchored in the perfect will of God that to love her can only result in deeper devotion to Christ.

She is a beautiful gift to all mankind, and an incomparable source of help and comfort to all Christians. But sadly, not even the pure and holy mother of God is sacred anymore. Now she who was ever-virgin has been hijacked for the purpose of making sexual immorality seem holy. Enter the “Queer Rosary”… blech.

The most nauseating part of this blasphemy is that the group it comes from includes some so-called Catholics, in particular a man named Eugene McMullan from Berkeley. Mr. McMullan is a theology graduate student and the founder of a group which calls itself “Catholics for Marriage Equality”. He invented what he maintains is a brand-new set of mysteries for the holy rosary called the “Relational Mysteries” that casts the relationship between biblical heroes like Ruth and Naomi, and David and Jonathan in a homosexual light.

Mr. McMullen and Rev. Jim Mitulski of the homosexual-activist Metropolitan Community Church in Berkeley organized an event last May in which they led a two-part class on “Praying the Queer Rosary.” It is unfathomable to me, but they managed to bring their “Queer Rosary” to the Newman Hall- Holy Spirit Parish in September. That’s right – a Catholic church endorsed this disparaging sacrilege. Shame on them.

Blasphemy seems to be the hottest current trend, especially when it’s directed at Catholic Christians. It’s bad enough when it comes from outside the church, such as Penn and Teller’s profane display of ignorance on Showtime, or the vulgar scene from Puccini’s Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera House – the one in which the baritone who plays Baron Scarpia simulates the sex act with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

But when it comes from within the church, when those who profess to be Catholic distort and rewrite the truth to make it fit their activist agenda, there can be no hesitation in exposing it and denouncing it. We’d better stiffen our spines real quick because garbage like this will be coming in a steady stream for the foreseeable future. The activist homosexual agenda, the erroneous belief in giving legal equivalency to homosexual practice and calling for marriage “equality” and the alleged “right” to abortion are not now, nor will they ever be compatible with the clear teaching of the Catholic Church which confirms the truth revealed within the Natural Law. If, God forbid, the day comes when the Catholic Church is the only Christian church left standing that still defends the sanctity of life and marriage as between one man and one woman, even then the Church will not cave in and compromise the truth.

It’s simple: there really can be no such thing as “Catholics for Marriage Equality”. Homosexual Practice cannot make a marriage. There’s no such thing as “Catholics for Choice”.Killing innocent children in the womb cannot ever be a moral choice. The true Catholic faith insists on the sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception throughout every precious moment of life up to and including a natural death and it insists that marriage can only exist between one man and one woman for life. Truth is not open to reinterpretation or modernization. The truth doesn’t age or become outdated or irrelevant. Mankind has not “evolved” or “advanced” to the point that we have outwitted God or grown beyond His original intent for our own human flourishing.

So how much more will it take to raise the ire of faithful Catholics in America? Or perhaps more importantly, what will it take to rouse the lukewarm Catholics in America out of their indifference? While they sit silently in the pews, in their homes, in their communities timidly allowing the truth of their faith to be warped and bent into some hollowed-out façade of religion, their own spirits are dulled into compliance with the evil masquerading as equality and tolerance.

Choose this day whom you will serve, whom you will defend, whom you will honor, ...

Jennifer Hartline, Thank you for illuminating to me such an important topic! I had never heard of the "Relational Mysteries" or of any other blasphemies this year. On October 7 I will pray fervently for souls. October 5 is the feast day of St. Maria Faustina; with her intercession we can also pray for the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ in the lives of so many confused Christians. Let us pray.

We have to remember in all of this, "God is not mocked" - only sin, separation from God, unholiness is mocked. It mocks itself. You cannot insult God - God is all loving and humble, full of mercy. A person can only insult himself - he can only destroy himself, heretic himself, loose his own soul. These people are not to be hated, they are to be pitied with a very great pity, and mourned for they are loosing their immortal souls - and their guardian angels weep - may we mourn with them when we sin.

It's amazing how many people want to identify themselves as "Catholic", even though their beliefs and ways of living couldn't be farther from Catholic teachings. I see this with so called "pro-choice Catholics", too. While I pray for these people, I wonder if they wouldn't be happy forming their own group, or perhaps joining the Unitarian Universalists or a similar religion. Why do they remain so stubbornly in a faith whose tenets they refuse to uphold? Is it the pretty stained glass, gold chalices and vestments? I just don't get it.

Berkeley is famous for being the home of many dried up old hippies who have nothing better to do than to indoctrinate the young into failed and warped beliefs like communism, paganism, and sexual perversion.

Fr.Corapi said it would happen, "by the next time I preach in public it will be worse".I'm taking it means inside the Church and outside the Church. We need the Fire of the Holy Spirit to tackle evil down to the ground. We Catholics need a serious devotion to all three in Holy Trinity not just the Father and the Son. I recommend Fr.Corapis new Cd and DVD Giver of Life. It will open Catholic peoples eyes big time.

So this "rosary" was "prayed" at Newman Hall - Holy Spirit Parish at UC Berkeley. Where do I see Bishop Cordileone of Oakland admonishing the parish staff (all Paulist Fathers)? Where's the Superior General of the Paulists speaking out?

Its called enemies within. We just need a New Pentacost,New Evagelization and a New Hallelujah in the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict is already wanting this to happen. Lets just do it and the ones who don't want to, so be it with them.We can't wait.

I am not surprised of what's happening in this country. We cannot go any lower in our morals and dignity. Look what happened at Lettermen show, the women gave him an ovation for his evil deeds. No wonder we have so many rapes and other crimes, We are at a point that we cannot see the difference between Good and Evil.!!!

It's really too bad that not all of the faithful Catholic comments were posted. I've made good comments twice, and still it's not posted, but the others were. I think I've had my fill here. There was absolutely no reason whatsoever to omit the post. I'm just as Catholic as the rest of you and very much pro-life, etc. I mentioned that we must pray for those who have been led astray. I don't see anything offensive with my comment, and it's every bit as Catholic as the rest of the comments made. I stayed on topic as the rest did, but for some reason or another, it was omitted twice. I am very saddened that someone would think of omitting another's post.

There are people that seek to destroy all that is good and Holy in the catholic church - the reason is simple, they are motivated by evil, whether they admit it or not. I have been reading more stories about people making light of the churches teachings and it's morality, and now this. I'm afraid it's not going to stop, because the forces of evil will always fight against the forces of good. As a catholic, I am proud of what our church does throughout the world - It's a beacon, a great "Light" in a world of darkness. Remember that in the Bible, Christ said to Peter - "On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it". The church needs our prayers, and so do these misguided people.

It's time to supplement prayers with action. Pro-abortion & pro- gay marriage politicians must be refused the sacrament of the Eucharist. James 2:26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Jennifer, Thank you. Just yesterday I was talking to my wife about this topic. I asked her what has happend to the St. Jerome's of the world. I am a convert and my fellow Catholic Christians including family claim that I am too extreme in my faith. How can that be? I have never hurt anyone, but I am always asking why do the administrators of the church continue to let situations continue without challenge. I do not think we should compromise our values or beliefs for political correctness. We need people at the front doors of our Parishes greeting people and also handing our scarves to cover those who expose shoulders and cleavage as an example. Thanks for your hard work in reporting this information. Keep God first and always remember that if the work that we do is for God's good it will prosper. Vivat Jesus.!

This is not some sort of 'right wing web site" but people who are bewildered and affronted by the evil assaulting Catholicism at every turn. This Rosary defamation reminds me of how statues have been attacked as well. I know and care for many gay people. At the same time, Catholics of every background have rights. I believe we do indeed have to stand up more for our faith and that will do good. I live in Maine, where there is vehement anti-Catholicism as a result of the gay marriage debate. When someone started berating Catholic schools the other day, I said that the goodness and beauty of Christ had saved my life. This person was stunned. Mary, pray for us. No wonder You weep when You visit us.

John Grimes: Respectfully and not to get into a political fight because as Christians we shouldnt do this but we should try to propose. This isnt a political sight last time I knew and I also dont get everything published because maybe it isnt in line with Catholic teaching. If Im inappropriate then I hope they dont post my material this is simply being humble which we are taught to be. Yes people have strong opinions but this is America but it also deals with Catholic teaching last time I knew. To the best of my knowledge the people that write here do practice what is out of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and if it isnt in step then they dont put it. Im not making any excuses but are you in line with Catholic teaching from the Catechism of the Catholic Church? So where do you stand as a Catholic? God Bless.

    October 5th, 2009 5:16 pm

John Grimes, I too often find myself in opposition to the political views of most people on this site. However, on the whole I don't think this site is politically charged, at least most of the editors aren't. They may agree with conservatives on more things than liberals, but they are simply following their Catholic doctrine as they learned it, not aligning their religion to meet their religious views. There are areas in which Catholicism agrees with liberalism rather than conservatism, such as the environment, kindness to immigrants, universal healthcare, etc. (Though of course some Catholics may dispute these, as they are not central to Catholicism). If you're looking for a more liberal-leaning Catholic news site, try the National Catholic Reporter.

What will it take to raise the lukewarm Catholics out of their apathy? Let me tell you, you're taking the wrong approach. Vocal intolerance on issues not central to Christian values drives people, especially young people, away from the Church - that should be manifestly obvious. Protesting loudly about the evils of gay marriage, an entirely secular institution outside of the purview of the Church, is alienating and unnecessary. The impression is that people who crow about these things care about having the APPEARANCE of piety - rather than exercising the tolerance and understanding Jesus showed us. Jesus befriended tax collectors and prostitutes; he may not have shared your 'cringing outrage' at this man trying to be creative in interpreting his Catholic faith. People who make a loud, public fuss about gay marriage when our world is afflicted with so much basic poverty, death and injustice seem to me to be focused on the wrong things. The essence of being a Christian is not to pass judgment on others, or to obsess over homosexuals somehow devaluing your own faith. Remember the Pharisee and the Tax Collector? It's not about how pious you appear in church, or how much contempt you have for those you consider un-Christian. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

To state the obvious, this story is not about those mean ole ogres of the Religious Right picking on poor defenseless gays. It's about gays engaging in one of their regular displays of hatred of Christians while crying about being persecuted. These people do NOT believe in "live and let live" once they attain power. Look at the wretched "Human Rights Commissions" in Canada or Obama's EEOC pick. These people are openly saying that the rights of Christians are incompatible with the "right" of gays to not see, hear or read anything that offends them. These people are a subset of the disturbingly large segment of society that no longer believes in democratic pluralism.

If the Gospels are to be taken as our pardigm for living then consider this: In all the Gospels Our Lord only ever attended one wedding. Our Lady only ever attended one wedding. Their presence there, their blessing on that wedding was a paradigm for all weddings that they would attend and bless - and absolutely, under no circumstances, was that wedding between two nice Jewish boys. We must stand together as Catholics and bring our Blessed Mother back into all parts of our lives. Pray the Rosary and ask our Lord to join this fight to educate with love all those that have been taken away by satin to keep his lies alive.Pray the rosary and spend time before the Blessed Sacrament in asking for courage to love those that are lost and follow such ideas. We all know who and where these practices come from so do not respond with hate but with the love of Jesus for all his children. Yes we nust respond to the acts of non-Christian ideas but do it through prayer and in asking for our Mothers intersession. Peace be with you, and if anyone would not return your gift of love shake the dust from your feet and walk away. May our Lord's peace and love be with you and may the grace of the Holy Spirit continue to guide you.

I share your indignation. I am a Cal grad, Class of 1964. I used to attend mass at the old Newman Hall, which since has been replaced by a starkly, cold concrete edifice. I am appalled that the priests who staff Holy Spirit Parish would tolerate blasphemy of this ilk. Does the new Bishop of Oakland have anything to say about such matters?
