Catholic League: When 'Diversity' is Code for Bigotry
12/5/2008

Cultural fascists invoke ‘diversity’ every December as cover for neutering Christmas says Bill Donohue.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Catholic League) - Here is a sample of how diversity is being celebrated this December:

• Elementary school students in Plainfield, Illinois are decorating a “Holiday” tree that represents 18 countries.

• A “Holiday Revelry” will be performed at the Framingham Civic League in Massachusetts; it is a “multicultural” event that includes “PAC Sword Dancers” and “traditional” Christmas songs such as “Pat-A-Pan.”

• “Winter Traditions” will be celebrated at the Fort Collins Museum in Colorado. They include “Celebrations of Light” that highlight “traditions, cultures and celebrations from across the world.”

• At a high school in Ocean City, Maryland, the annual “Winter Concert” this year will feature a performance entitled “Eid Mubarak,” a Muslim holiday song.

• At the Comcast Center in Philadelphia there will be a huge “Multimedia Holiday Show” featuring secular songs. Religious Christmas songs are expressly prohibited.

• At Missouri State University, a new school rule explicitly bans the menorah and the nativity scene from being displayed in common areas. Nonetheless, the menorah is displayed; the crèche is not.

• At an architectural firm in Wichita, Kansas there will be no Christmas party. But there will be a party. The CEO says, “we call our December party a holiday party.”

Darby Herrington, a Colorado lawyer, wrote a column defending these kinds of things. According to her, “People of other religions tend to harbor some ill feelings toward all things Christmas.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue offered his thoughts:

“Cultural fascists invoke ‘diversity’ every December as cover for neutering Christmas—they never choose some other month to practice their multicultural religion. And by the way, who are these people from other religions who hate Christmas? I never met one. It would be more accurate to say that it’s precisely the persons who make this charge who hate Christmas.”

The Catholic League is the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organization. Founded in 1973 by the late Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., the Catholic League defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination. It is led by its' President, William A. Donohue, Ph.D.

'Cultural fascists'? What a hateful thing to say. Fascism has a very specific meaning, and it's unkind, even un-Christian, to apply it to people who are trying to avoid offense to others, even if there are sometimes silly and misgudied excesses. No one's taking away our Christmas: we can celebrate it till the cows come home, have three creches in every room --in every window of every room, in fact-- unless we just so happen to be a publicly funded branch of the government. Which is not likely if we are reading this blog. Our country certainly was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, and those very principles led the founding fathers and generations of brilliant and often godly statesmen to keep church and state separate, after the disastrous experience of church and state in bed together, of which European history offers countless blood-soaked examples. Let's keep Christmas the beautiful thing it already is, something silent and pure, and not let it become another occasion for the strident complaining and belligerent attitude that keeps so many people away from our Church. Peace, feliz navidad!

The error is in the area of separation of CHURCH vs. STATE.
Europe has it all wrong too.
Recognizing a majority group does not mean "institutionalizing" it.
It's ok to recognize Christians, just like any facet of the society. The secular nature of the State is not violated by doing that. Right now confusion reigns...sign of Satan's action.
Pope brings clarity...what does he say on this subject?

Christmas is supposed to be a Christian holiday and as such any celebrations should only include traditional Christian activities.

To justify taking Christmas away from Christians, secularists make the claim that this is not a Christian nation but a multicultural nation and therefore, all faiths should be celebrated. I disagree.

The holiday is Christman and it celebrates the birth of Jesus--not Mohammed, not Buddha, not Confucious or any of the other religious icons. If these other religions want holidays, they should have their states declare them. We should not have our Christian holiday co-opted just because someon might be offended. Christians are the majority in this country.

Why is it that it is okay to offend Christians but not okay to offend anyone else? In fact, if you offend a Moslin, a Buddhis or any other language you could face losing your job or even going to jail.

No matter what the secularists claim, this country was founded on Judeo-Christian values and beliefs. The majority of our founding fathers, contrary to what the secularists claim, were not only Christians but many of them ordained ministers. Our Constitution, Bill of Right and other documents were founded upon Christianity.

Our first ammendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but secularists interpret that as freedom from religion. The Pilgrims came to this country to escape religious persecution, yet that is what we Christians are now facing.
