Australian billionaire to build life-size replica of the Titanic

He promises it will set sail in 2016

Billionaire Clive Palmer, Australian mining magnate has commissioned a Chinese shipyard to build a replica of the ill-fated Titanic. The replica of the 1912 luxury liner will be complete in every detail, but will have modern technology to prevent a repeat of the original's fateful maiden voyage 100 years ago.

Billionaire Clive Palmer says that construction of the luxury cruise ship would begin next year and the ship would be ready to sail in 2016.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Palmer, who has strong links to China, has told Australian media that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the ship.

Palmer says that construction of the luxury cruise ship would begin next year and the ship would be ready to sail in 2016.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement.

The new Titanic will make its maiden voyage from London to New York in late 2016. The cost of the construction of the new vessel has not been revealed.

"Of course, it will sink if you put a hole in it," Palmer said at a press conference. "It is going to be designed so it won't sink. But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen."

The original Titanic, the largest ship of its type in 1912 sank 100 years ago this month when it struck an iceberg on the night of April 15, 1912, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. More than 1,500 people perished in the disaster, which captured the popular imagination, as the Titanic had been previously been declared as "unsinkable."

Palmer built a fortune on real estate on Australia's Gold Coast tourist strip before becoming a coal mining magnate. Palmer is reportedly Australia's fifth-richest person worth more than $5.2 billion in U.S. dollars. The mining magnate from Queensland owns a luxury resort on Australia's Sunshine Coast and plans to build a fleet of luxury liners.

Palmer says that previous attempts to build a Titanic replica failed because proponents failed to raise enough money and commission a shipyard.

Palmer did not provide a cost estimate. He said he had established a new shipping company, Blue Star Line Pty. Ltd., and that design work for the Titanic II has begun with assistance from a historical research team.

The diesel-powered ship will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, but they will be purely decorative.

I agree with DarthJ - they said the original wouldn't sink either..... When will we ever learn?
They had better say a lot of prayers while they are building it and submit it to HIS DIVINE PROTECTION.

Yeah! I'am sure every detail !Like who's going to book a room with four bunks and a common sink and the common bathroom down the hall for other rooms too! and eat meals in what looks like a American highschool cafeteria and how bout that pool my neighbor's kids play in a bigger pool then the Titanic's in fact I think the people with money had to share a bathtub? How bout the first-class rooms who wants to sail around in rooms with decor that will remind most people now of a over the top Bed and Breakfast .
