LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Farrukh Malik, a 66-year-old accountant brutally killed his wife at their north London home after suffering "depressive psychosis" following the death of his mother. The father of two, must continue with medical treatment for the next two years.

He is now living with his brother in Slough, Berkshire, was set free after a judge ruled he had no power to detain him because of medical reports which state he is no longer a danger.

A psychiatrist warned Malik's condition could deteriorate again. Two other doctors said he was a low risk.

Setting him free, Judge Gerald Gordon stressed the order was "not a punishment.

"There is only one reason for making these requirements, and it's to ensure that you do not become unwell again," he said.

"There is no legal basis that would enable me to make a hospital order.

"If there is any indication that you are, the appropriate action can be taken before anything, let alone the tragic events that did happen, can happen.

"The family will play an important part in keeping an eye on you on a day-to-day basis," he added.

Pakistan-born Malik admitted to carrying out the killing, and was unanimously cleared of murder by reason of insanity following a two-day trial at the Old Bailey last December. Prosecutors did not challenge the defense.

Jurors cleared him of murder after two psychiatrists said he was suffering paranoid delusions at the time and did not have control over his actions.

Malik has since undergone eight rounds of electro convulsive therapy and is said to be responding to the treatment.

The court heard how he had a "good and happy" relationship with his wife, a playground assistant, and later refused to believe that he had killed her at their north London home.

Malik was in Pakistan last February when his mother died. Following his return to the U.K., he suffered a series of health problems including a heart attack and insomnia, before plunging into a deep depression and later threatening to kill himself, prior to the killing of his wife.

    @Joe and Just Wondering,

did you two read the story or just the title and then make up your own story? Apparently, you two are incredibly omnipotent and we don't need psychiatrists, doctors or court rooms. Your verdict....."guilty by being Muslim". Oh, and don't forget the part where it states he and a "good and happy relationship with his wife". Their is such a thing as temporary mental illness.....it does happen.
@Just Wondering, you couldn't even read the article correctly to get the number of stab wounds right.
    Racism at its finest.

    Nuff said.

cathy..who are you trying to fool? us or yourself? This is obviously a islamically sanctioned honour killing, a brutal crime that is tottally OK according to islamic principles. it is unbelievable how this cold-blood murderer will walk away with fallacious "insanity" claims.Once again british government, judicial system use a two-tier system: one for muslims and another one for non-muslims, in which the muslism have special treatment. The UK has become a joke!

Cathy, how about the fact that he stabbed her 37 times? This murderer is living with two children!!! What happens in 2 years when the medical "treatments" cease?

I fail to see why the fact that he was Muslim has anything to do with this killing, or why it was mentioned at all. If it had been an 'honor-killing', that might be news worthy, but otherwise it is immaterial. Or perhaps there is more to the story than written here?
