CAIRO, Egypt (AsiaNews) - More than 20 thousand people attended the funerals of 17 of the 25 victims killed in clashes between Coptic Christian demonstrators and the army of the on the 9th of October. The funeral took place in the Coptic Cathedral in Cairo, where the priest in charge of the rite called them the slain "martyrs who have saved the Church."

Before entering the church the crowd processed along the road that links the cathedral to the Coptic Hospital in the district of Rameses Abasseya district to cries of "Muslims and Christians are one." In a message to the community Coptic Patriarch Shenouda III announced three days of mourning and prayer to commemorate the victims.

Aida Mahrous, Coptic, 42, told the newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm: "the next regime will be the same as the previous one. Politics will never change. To solve our problems we need to show that Christians and Muslims are one people, because otherwise the government will remain a mass of corrupton. "

Tuesday morning, the emergency unit organized by the Supreme Council of the military launched investigations to punish the officers responsible for the deaths. Eyewitnesses said the military turned angrily on the Christian mob gathered outside the headquarters of state television crushing people under the wheels of armored vehicles.

The clashes erupted when some criminal gangs from the slums of Cairo attacked the demonstrators who were protesting against the destruction of a Coptic church in the province of Aswan (Upper Egypt). Local sources also accused the state TV of inciting Muslims to revolt against the Copts, inviting them to defend the values of Islam and the Arab spring.

The international community has expressed its concern inviting the army to clarify the facts. But the Copts accuse the U.S. and Europe of doing nothing and ask Western governments to put pressure on the military Council to act in defence of religious minorities. Yesterday, Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al Azhar University invited Christian and Muslim leaders to meet to put an end to incidents between the two communities.

Bullbajer..you are the one that is making generalizations and oversimplifications by saying that islam is "not that bad", or that it is "not that evil", falsely linking the faith to the aparent majority of nice peaceful law-abiding muslims behaviour/contradiction. The problem is those so called "moderates" are either very confused people, ignorant about the brutal savage and inhuman nature of their faith, or they are hipocrits who believe in teh brutal tenets of the islamic faith, but for materialistic reasons, prefer not to live according to those practical commandments (sharia).I do not see how showing islam for what it is-pure evil-"creates hate"..how can we "create hate" just for denoucing and exposing it?! That doesn't make any sense. But if you have any doubts about islam, just go read the islamic literature and see the way it is practiced in europe, in america, specially in the muslim countries(the most horrible places on earth to live), where there is no respect whatsoever for any human rights and indeed you can be kiiled just for making a meaningless innofensive/ ridiculous cartoon...bullbajer I am afraid you are totally out of touch with reality...you should wake up and smell the fire of islam., not bury your head on the floor and pretend the islamic threat/problem doesn't exist, downplay it and whitewash or justify the more than 17000 islamic terrorist attacks since september 11th, which have been highly supported by the overwelming majority of "moderate peaceful muslims", even inside our borders, to fictional causes, Just see the aproving rates to sharia law implementation in europe amongst those muslim"moderates", the rape waves, the robberies, the violent attacks on non-muslims who are growing, as the muslim population grows more and more...you don't see the link, the connection between violence, human rights abuses and islam, then you cannot see anything at all right?

Katherine, I'm not saying that "Muslims are really nice people." I'm not saying that they aren't. I'm saying that both statements are huge generalizations and to throw them around just creates hate. I don't doubt that some Muslims commit horrible crimes such as the ones you mentioned.

I think bullbajer should consider come living into the UK where muslim gangs create no-go areas for non muslims, and british non-muslims are systematiclly assaulted, intimidated, robbed, terrorises and wimen are raped, specially teenagers. Then he can say that muslims are really nice people, but before doing that, I don't think that makes any sense.

Dear Deacon..I do not think it is "reasonable" in any aspect, either rethorical, theological, scientifical..you name it... to deffend that islam is "just another religion", that promotes "peace, love, tolerance ..."when all you have to do is read the quran, the hadiths, the suras , the travellers guide and any other islamic literature and compare it with what muslims as a whole-the umma-have been doing since muhammad conquered arabia, not with arguments, not with reason, not with dialogue, not with love either..they butchered more than 270 million innocent people, wiped out entire brilliant civilizations, cultures, art, literature, science, progress, humanism.They are practicing exactly what muhammad commanded them to..I do not think I am being"insulting" or "redundant" just because I am pointing to what islam truly is, and what islam truly practices all over the word which is the genocide of everything that is non-islamic.To me it is strange and unbelievable to see christians deffending islam?!??!!bulbajer does that all the time. I was recently in a muslim country where I was robbed, abused, physically assaulted and spited by muslims..but Bulbajer tells me they don't do this because they are under infleunce of islam. I totally disagree...I have been in many countries, met many people from several religions and the only people who deliberately did this to me were the muslims...they are doing what the quran commads them to do.the entire middle east before islam conquered it, was christian.egypt copts are now on the verge of extinction..does any one thinks that has nothing to do with islam??? I'm overwelmed...

However, you are continually saying the same thing about Islam. Sometimes it is simply over the top as well as redundant. Please note our clear explanation about the posting of comments. Bullbajer..their religion as a whole IS evil. I do know many muslims and I can assure you they are the most FAKE, hypocrital human beings on the planet, because they believe the evil teachings of their evil religion, but because they know that if they FULLY applied sharia in their worldly lives, life would become almost unberable,they refuse to apply their faith in all matters, AS islam commands!no bigger hipocrisy is shown by any other people... muslims are taught o LIE to spread islam and moderate muslims are expert on the creeping stealth jihad that is islamising our planet, thanks to our currupt leaders and false intellectuals..if you believe what a confessed LIAR says about their evil, false, deceptive religion-islam-then you are a fool! webmaster ...STOP censoring posts.thank you!

JeanCatherine... I'm kind of disappointed. Do you know any Muslims? I do. They don't point shotguns at me. I understand that some Muslims point shotguns at others (and do a lot worse, too). But that does not mean that their religion as a whole is evil. As for your accusation that I am a "liberal catholic", I am in fact liberal and consider myself Catholic. I am also pro-life, pro-love, and pro-peace. I don't let ideology dominate my religious beliefs.

Bulbajer, it is ISLAM itself and the most honest PIOUS devout muslims themselves that deffend the ab-rogation theory.Obviously they use taqyya when speaking to ignorant quranic illiterates like yourself and try to foll you and other naive people who never read the quran..they will quote ONLY the "nice peaveful tolerant" versicles, that were rendered totally invalid and uselss by the last decisive ones, or say that the later ones were ab-rogated by the first ones(they know full well they are LYING to you and they repeat this dispicable dishonest behavious over, and over, and over again)..they only imperative for them is to make islam sucessful and dominat worldwide and for that, , as the quran says and the lates decisive versicles CLEARLY command"anything goes"..lying, killing, deceiving, raping, stealing,torturing, kidnapping, using insane violence and terror.,,you name it!!

Mohammed was the right hand of the devil in deceiving people in his attempt to syncretize the Old and New testament. Nothing new came from the quran and Muhammed never had virtues to speak about.
