Demonstrators vow that rape victim's death will not be forgotten

The father of the Indian woman who died after being brutally gang-raped on a bus has revealed his daughter's final words to him. The unnamed 23-year-old physiotherapy student died this past weekend after she was beaten with an iron bar, assaulted and thrown from a speeding bus in new Delhi.

Her passing will not be forgotten. Her story has sparked protests and vigils across India. 'The fight has just begun. We want all the accused hanged, we will fight for that 'til the end,' the victim's brother has vowed.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The 55-year-old victim's father says his daughter gripped his hand with a tear rolling from her eye. He said: "She asked me if I had taken my dinner. I said yes.

"She then told me that I should sleep. She said 'you go to sleep, I will also sleep.' Then she embraced my hand and slept as a tear dropped from the corner of her eye. Those were her last words to me. Thereafter, she never gained consciousness and didn't talk to any of us."

Since dubbed "India's daughter," the victim succumbed from her injuries in a Singapore hospital. The victim's mother is currently in the hospital after collapsing following her daughter's cremation in her native India.

Her passing will not be forgotten. Her story has sparked protests and vigils across India. "The fight has just begun. We want all the accused hanged, we will fight for that 'til the end," the victim's brother has vowed.

"We are all in shock. Nobody can accept this news. My wife took it hardest," her father, who worked double shifts at the Indira Gandhi International Airport to put her through medical school says.

"It is too painful. I have not gone in her room. She was born in this house. Her books, clothes, they are all here. It is hard to believe I will never hear her voice again."

Five men, one of them a bus driver and a 17-year-old have been charged with murder and rape after the attack in New Delhi on December 16. Investigators are now seeking the death penalty and say there are more than 30 witnesses. The charges are expected to reach court later this week.

India's army and navy have cancelled their New Year's celebrations. Hotels and clubs across Delhi also said they would hold off on their usual parties to honor the young woman's passing.
