We ask you, urgently: don't scroll past this

Dear readers, Catholic Online was de-platformed by Shopify for our pro-life beliefs. They shut down our Catholic Online, Catholic Online School, Prayer Candles, and Catholic Online Learning Resources essential faith tools serving over 1.4 million students and millions of families worldwide. Our founders, now in their 70's, just gave their entire life savings to protect this mission. But fewer than 2% of readers donate. If everyone gave just $5, the cost of a coffee, we could rebuild stronger and keep Catholic education free for all. Stand with us in faith. Thank you.

Though my life began 22 years earlier, my life really began after I married Aaron and became pregnant with Noah. I was on top of the world. I had everything I had ever wanted and had dreamed of: my dear husband- and we were starting our family. My dream of being a Mommy was beginning.

We were attending Mass, and I was kneeling in prayer. This unbelievable feeling came over me. I knew it was the Holy Spirit and that we had conceived our precious baby. I had never experienced anything like that; and to this point, have not yet again.

One month later, the doctor having confirmed our pregnancy, I received a phone call that everyone dreads.

Aaron had called to say he was on his way home from work- as was our custom. But, he didn't come home. And he didn't come home. I paged him. Called his cell phone. "Maybe he stopped to get me flowers" as I'd not been feeling well with the beginning of my pregnancy.

Finally the phone rang. It was not Aaron. It was a police officer, who told me, "Your husband has been in an accident. He is having a grand mal seizure. The EMS is taking him to the hospital." I also asked if anyone else had been involved- thank God, no one was.

We knew Aaron had epilepsy; and he was taking his medication. We thought he was as controlled as he could be. We are conservative; and do not take unnecessary risks- like his driving if it were to be of danger to himself or anyone around him.

Being new to the area, I didn't know very many people. Who I did know were the girls at the gym, and the two ladies at the Children's Hospital where I volunteered. Our insurance designated hospital was across town. Because of the seriousness of the seizure, Aaron was taken to the hospital where I happened to be a volunteer. I called the Children's Playroom to see if either of the ladies I worked with was there. Just as she was walking out for the night, Betty answered the phone. She met me at the emergency entrance and waited with me.

We asked if Aaron had been brought in yet. They said no.

We asked again. Still he had not been logged in at the hospital.

For an hour, we waited for word that he was there. I finally called the police department to be sure I was at the right hospital. I was... so where was he???

In going over the events of the accident, we believe Aaron must have gone through 2 major intersections, each 4 by 6 lanes, with traffic lights, before veering into the "suicide" lane, hitting the curb, and flipping the car; landing on the guardrail and balanced by a fire hydrant. He was taken from the car, upside down, while seizing, during rush-hour.

A nurse finally went room to room, and found him. He'd been brought in so quickly that he was not logged into the computer. I was not allowed to see him as he was still seizing and they were working on him. Betty knew I was pregnant and kept me calm, made sure I ate a bite or two and helped me call my family to tell them the news. She stayed with me for hours, until my parents got there, and then Aaron's parents and their spouses arrived as well.

By the time I got to see Aaron, he was in the ICU in an induced coma. We didn't know the extent of the damage the seizure may have caused. In their article, Epilepsy and Seizures by Dr Lori Feldman, DVM and Henry Feldman, MA EMT-M, NREMT-B, they state, "the 2 basic reasons that seizures are harmful (in the short term) is that the patient can sustain trauma from the convulsions, and the brain can be starved of oxygen during sustained seizures. This can lead to brain damage, as any other oxygen deprivation of the brain will." I was told that he had seized for 3 hours.

We were able to bring Aaron home 3 days later. My mom stayed with us to help get us back on our feet. Aaron's work said he "had" to take 6 weeks leave. Fortunately for me, we had decided before we got married that I would not work outside the home. This was a tremendous blessing as I was able to be home and take care of him during this time and didn't have to worry about losing a job myself. Taking care of my family IS my job!

By the grace of God, we never found him to have any permanent effects from the accident or the seizure. I must also note that when Aaron's father had gone to the car to find any personal belongings, he found the car to be totaled. He did find, however, our Guardian Angel visor clip. Also, going back to the scene of the accident, we found that he had crashed right in front of a Church we had visited just weeks before.
