Catholic Music Spotlight with Kelly-Lynn
by Lisa M. Hendey
Catholic Online
Kelly-Lynn Federman has been busy following her dreams and trying to determine God's path in her young life. In many respects, she's a typical fifteen year old, with dreams of a big, bright future. What makes her special is that her dreams include using her incredible vocal abilities to give praise to God and to share her Catholic faith.
Kelly-Lynn, a freshman at Trinity High School in Ocala, Florida has toured internationally, opened up for a Dove Award winning group and recently recorded an appearance for EWTN's popular show "Backstage". Her future in the Catholic music industry looks as dazzling as her smile. I recently had the chance to interview Kelly-Lynn about her music and life as a Catholic teen.
Q. Please tell us a bit about yourself and your family.
A: Well I'm a 15 year old girl. I am very outgoing but at times I can be shy (but not a lot). I am a freshman at Trinity Catholic High school and this is my first year at a private school. Signing is my total passion and I plan on singing till the day I die. When I sing, I feel like that is who I am and I wanna show the world who I am through my music. As far as my family goes, they have been a BIG help in my career! Since day one they have been supporting me in everything I do, especially music.
Q. How did you get started in music? What musical training have you had the opportunity to pursue?
A: I simply got started in music by LOVING it and starting as a 3 year old little girl, I couldn't get enough of singing with mommy to the radio and singing along in church. When I got a little older I started singing little solos for my church and loved it! I did plays for my elementary school. Starting at age 10, I began singing more and more in public (as much as possible). When I was 13, I traveled to The U.K and trained with Charlotte Church's vocal Coach, Louise Ryan, who did back-up on my album that I recorded there. Every week I get trained with my vocal coach Darlene Schlatter.
Q. How does your faith and spiritual life affect your music?
A: It affects EVERYTHING! The feeling of the song is affected and my attitude.
Q. What are your musical goals and aspirations?
A: I want to be extremely well-known in the music business. I want people to be touched by the voice God has given me and the music I sing. I NEVER want to sing dirty lyrics or turn into another Brittany Spears. In my opinion, the world needs an artist with more style and class.
Q. What are some of your favorite memories related to your musical career?
A: I have lots and lots of wonderful memories. One would have to be my entire 5th grade year. I did so much that year! Another memory would have to be when I was 13 years old. I was doing a Christmas tour and I performed a concert for the Troops of the 45th Air Force Squadron and The Air Space Command (NASA) at "The Patrick Air Force Base", in Brevard County Florida, for the annual tree lighting ceremony. I gave all the troops free CDs. I also received two medals from the Squadrons commander Brig, Gen Gary Pavlovich. The first medal of honor was for "Combat Support" and the second medal was for "Community Service and support during a time of war." That day and night was so fun!
Q. Do you think it's important for parents to be involved in their teenagers' musical choices?
A: I think you should let your child have free musical preferences. Music is a way for teens to express themselves. A parent may not understand the music a teen is listening to because it may not apply to them. I do believe that it is important to praise God through Christian music as well.
Q. Do you sometimes feel pressure from peers to make choices you know are incorrect and how do you confront these challenges?
A: Of Course I do. I haven't heard of any teenager not go through the challenge of peer-pressure. Some teens are stronger than others on this issue. Personally, I am very strong willed when it comes to pressure from other people to do wrong things. I just stay focused on God and my goals in life.
Q. What advice would you give to teens who have dreams on how to pursue and attain these dreams?
A: Well, I'm sure you have heard this a million times, but that's only because it is so important....NEVER GIVE UP!! NEVER let anybody stop you from what you want in life. Follow God's plan for your life and you will get there.
Q. Are there any additional thoughts or comments you'd like to share with our readers?
A: Yes, I want everybody to know, I'm not here to lie and say I am perfect. I'M NOT! I AM A SINNER and I can admit that, but even if I sin, I still know that Jesus is my savoir. I love doing what I do (singing) and I want to go as far as the Lord will take me in music.
