Guest Opinion: R.I.P, Boy Scouts of America Comments

It's a sad day for both Scouting and for freedom. Indeed, it's a sad day for America. The century-old Boy Scouts of America (BSA) - created in 1910 to "prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes" - has betrayed its own constituency, mission, oath and law. The Church does teach us to accept everyone, including those with same-sex attraction... but nobody is allowed to act on those attractions, i.e. to claim the "gay" identity. Calling oneself an open homosexual is not what people who are trying to remain chaste do. They would keep their sexual orientation private and seek counseling with places such as NARTH or Courage. The public would not know of their orientation, but their support group would so they could help one another.

I think it's unfair to impose secular pagan morality onto Boy Scouts. And allowing openly "gay" scouts is going to make people feel uncomfortable and change the spirit of Boy Scouts. Instead of spending time with the guys it's going to be boys having to worry about being hit on by other boys and having to share tents with gay couples. Time with the guys is supposed to be a time to let loose and have fun and *not* worry about being watched by or having to impress potential romantic partners. People act differently when they're in a group of the same sex vs the opposite sex, and homosexuals will be like the opposite sex in that they're attracted to the other boys.

Boy Scouts was weak in that it caved into pressure. Now they will keep caving until the gay Hollywood elite are pleased with the scouts.

I think we need to start a new scouting group that is sponsored by the Church and therefore is separate from the state and secular corporations.

I have defended our faith on other forums such as FoxNews and MSN concerning the core teaching on this very subject. I have been called a bible thumper, simple-minded and a litany of other labels...on for all of those I am grateful.

No matter how the liberal press and politicians and history revisonists pressure the American people to accpet homosexuality as a valid relationship, I am glad to see there are those of us who know it is sheer folly on their part. When Obama was first elected, I disctinctly remember the morning after as I went outdoors and could "feel" a definite change in the air; and not for the good. His record clearly shows his fondness of the homosexual plight as he has allowed gays to openly serve in our military and his crusade to legalize homosexual marriage and now look at the trickle down effect. (BTW, I do not like using the term "Gay" as it was once a word to express joy and I know some women whose parents named them the same. Now, its a word to express a sordid and unnatural lifestyle).

We are going to be persecuted for our basic beliefs and must seek refuge in the Lord our God. Steel yourselves for the onslaught of morals and virtues to come.

I disagree with Steve's comments. The Boy Scouts' acceptance of openly gay scouts is not a simple matter of being welcoming and accepting to all. First of all, the Catholic Church welcomes all who repent of wrongdoing. Jesus Himself welcomed repentant sinners. He didn't say to the prostitutes and the tax collectors and adulteresses, "It doesn't matter what you believe or what you do." He told sinners to repent, to sin no more. Secondly, while the Church makes a distinction between homosexual inclinations and homosexual acts, and in that sense is accepting of celibate homosexuals, it doesn't say that homosexuality is perfectly normal. Secondly, in the context of Scouting, there are certain practical considerations. How do you handle the problem of camping when you have a boy with a sexual attraction to other boys? Do you put him in his own tent? Does he shower alone? Does he have a separate latrine? And you have various ages in Scouting - from around 11 to the 18th birthday. Would you want your 11-year-old son camping with an openly homosexual 17-year-old? It seems to me that this new policy is unfair to both the straight kids and the "homosexual" kids (how do kids know they're gay this young anyway), putting tremendous pressure on both. Even if the gay boy isn't sexually active, isn't this putting him in the way of tremendous temptation? This is a disaster all aroubnd.

RIP Boy Scouts. Thanks Matt Barber for an article that hits the bullseye. I would only add that it is a shame that the Catholic and Protestant Leadership didn't stand up publicly to support the Boy Scouts and encourage them to stand firm. Instead, they were silent by-standers. But what else can we expect?

The Boy Scouts ended long ago when they were inundated with liberalism. They turned from teaching self-reliance, discipline, and overcoming hardship to teaching an abomination of collectivism. Collectivism is the prison. Self-reliance is the key.

    Mr Barber,
Your comments on the new Boy Scout policy regarding membership being allowed to homosexual scouts was rather discouraging and one-sided.
Do you not realize the Catholic Church accepts all, that means EVERYONE.
Nothing in the new policy or in Boy Scout literature endorses or advocates the gay life style; in fact all members are prohibited from using the Boy Scouts to promote “any social or political position or agenda”.
An official statement accompanying the new policy “reinforces that Scouting is a youth program, and any sexual conduct, whether heterosexual or homosexual, by youth of Scouting age is contrary to the virtues of Scouting.”
The new policy will require scout leaders to be more involved, espicially at campouts. I am certain boys in Boy Scouts have engaged in homosexual acts in the past while in scouts, and most have probably not been reported.
My point is that the new policy will help to clarify much of what has gone on in the past, but has not been recognized. If the Boy Scouts of American deals with the new policy in a just manner, it may actually strenghten an all ready wonderful organization.
Becoming a member of Boy Scouts starts at the age of eleven, and ends at the age of eighteen. Many young men do question their sexual orientation during that time. Not allowing them to be a Boy Scout can only do them an injustice.
I know you are an attorney who concentrates on constitutional law, but I believe your "take" on this new policy is incorrect.
The leadership of Boy Scouts need to step up now, and provide resources and educational seminars for all scout councils, scout masters and scouts. This is NOT the death of Boy Scouts, it is actually the beginning of an understanding of an unwrittten policy that has hopefully been in place since the inception of Boy Scouts.

Couldn't agree more with you, Matt. You're absolutely right. This weekend's edition of USA Today had an OpEd pushing for exactly what you've indicated is to be expected from their corner, i.e., "Sin is never satisfied. The homofascist thirst for absolute affirmation is unquenchable." I sent USAToday the following "letter to the Editor" in reply to that article:

The capitulation of the Boy Scouts of America on the issue of homosexuality within their ranks is an utter failure in "moral courage," repudiating completely the first of their "Aims of Scouting" - moral character development. It is not "progress" as your opinion would suggest. Rather, it is an illustration of modern society's abject ignorance of the moral law, the natural law, and ethics --- not one of which supports the sexual dysfunction that is homosexuality. What is untrue is your assertion that "gay adult leaders would (not) put Scouts at greater risk." Are we forgetting the "gay priest" scandal? In 95% of the cases the victim was a post-pubescent male; that's "pederasty," or homosexual predation of young males. If the moral strictures of the Church are not enough to say "hands off" to the homosexual that infiltrates the priesthood, how are the Scouts any safer? And then there's an 18 year old girl having sex with a 14 year old girl. We don't expect more of the same by a society now given to "winking" at homosexuality? Here's a question: who are you going to believe, God or the American Psychological Association?

Homosexuals are free to establish their own boy scout program. But it is not freedom they want. They want to take others' freedom, to force the Scouts to change their beliefs. Homosexual activists have been trying to destroy the Boy Scouts for decades. They finally did it, and it is evil!
