Editorial: Newtown is Our Town. Mourning the Massacre, Considering America's Culture of Death Comments

A visibly shaken Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy told us all, as we hung on his every word, that "evil visited this community today and it's too early to speak of recovery." He was absolutely correct. This has become America's tragedy. We all know deep within that those little children are our children as well. Evil visited the entire Nation on December 14, 2012. It is causing us to pause and examine ourselves. Continue Reading

    David and Joan,

There are no evil guns, just evil people. While we look for a way to prevent tragedies like this, please consider that every safeguard in place worked. He was denied the purchase of a gun earlier this month, and yet stole a law abiding person's guns and committed this heinous act nonetheless. We don't ban all cars to stop drunk driving.. Or all forks to stop obesity...or salt to stop high blood pressure deaths. Consider also that lover 2 million times a year good people thwart crimes with legal firearms, and by banning guns, the crime rates would skyrocket, just as they have in DC and Chicago. It is not the tool most often used for good that senselessly murdered. It was a madman who did this. Now we suffer from a terror foist upon us by a media bent on making money off people's pain and suffering. I pray that all find solace in God's promises and grace.. And that we look to fix the cause, not punish the innocent for a madman's crimes.

David and Joan, if someone else at the school was legally carrying a gun, they may have been able to take down the murderer before he had a chance to kill so many innocents. Do not take away the average citizens' ability to protect themselves from the evil acts of others. If guns are taken away from the law-abiding, then only the bad guys will be armed. In Britain, crime rose 300% when the "people" were disarmed. Obviously, the bad guys didn't get the memo. Disarm us and horrid crimes like this will continue to occur. Marxist governments also have an easier time trampling on freedom when the citizenry is unarmed. Ask those who lived under Hitler, Stalin, Mao. The second amendment is "the right of the people to keep and bear arms." Look it up.

After the initial shock from the horror committed at Sandy Hook Elementary and the many private funerals and eulogies which we must rightfully endure will come the public discussion of why such a brutal act of slaughter of innocence could have ever been perpetrated in our nation, again as well we should. Personally I would suggest that as one prepares to venture into that discussion which will obviously involve the second amendment, mental health, security in our schools and other issues they take care not to overlook one which our current culture has blinded us from and hardened the hearts of some to the extent they might have little justification to be a part of the national morning.
We see our tearful president remorsefully addressing the stunned nation describing the details of the massacre noting that the 20 little kindergarteners had their whole lives ahead of them. Well, most of it to be sure. However, they did have five or six years of life and love from their moms and dads. They did have the brief opportunity to experience the beauty of God’s nature and breathe its air.
A full lifetime was denied these little ones by a disgraceful criminal act of cowardice on the part a single deranged individual who didn’t see the need for them to exist. Yet we can not deny that just six or seven years ago the mothers of those little souls had, through another dreadful act on the part of five misguided judges, the right to choose likewise and the laws of our nation would protect her from the prosecution we all would be demanding for this perpetrator had he survived the tragedy. Think about this as you mourn and pray for the families involved, has God given us an opportunity to see the near similarity of destruction of innocent children??

This is exactly the conversation our family had about this tragedy. Thank you for this article. I believe God is speaking to all of us and it is time to start listening. May God have mercy on us all! My prayers are with all of you.

    BOO HOO!

AND THE PRESIDENT WAS CRYING ALSO???

    BOO HOO!

WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF THE UNBORN THAT THE PRESIDENT HAS MURDERED HIMSELF!

AND WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF CATHOLICS THAT VOTED FOR HIM THAT MADE IT POSSIBLE???

WHERE ARE THERE TEARS FOR THE UNBORN???

    I TELL YOU SOLEMNLY...

THIS HAS HAPPENED BECAUSE OF ABORTION, GAY MARRIAGE AND LACK OF SCHOOL PRAYER!

    THESE ARE CHASTISEMENTS OF GOD!

FOR GOD CANNOT PROTECT YOU IF YOU REJECT GOD BECAUSE OF YOUR FREE WILL!

DO YOU THINK THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO CREATE YOUR OWN UTOPIA WITHOUT GOD???

    YOU ARE SADLY MISTAKEN!

AMEN, AMEN I SAY TO YOU...

WHAT HAS HAPPENED AT TAILHOOK IS BY YOUR OWN HAND IN RE-ELECTING A MONSTER LIKE OBAMA, WHO IS INFINITELY MORE GUILTY THAN LANZA!

AND YOU WHO VOTED FOR HIM ARE EQUALLY AS GUILTY IF NOT MORE, BECAUSE YOU HAVE GONE TO COMMUNION IN A STATE OF MORTAL SIN!

AND NOW YOU ARE GUILTIER OF A MORE SERIOUS SIN, THE SIN OF PERSECUTING JESUS-CHRIST HIMSELF THROUGH THE GOVERNMENT'S PERSECUTION OF THE CLERGY BECAUSE OF THE HHS MANDATE, FOR PERSECUTING THE CLERGY IS LIKE PERSECUTING JESUS HIMSELF, BECAUSE THEY ARE PERSONA CHRISTI!

THIS WILL NOT BE THE END, THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF GOD'S CHASTISEMENTS FOR YOUR SINS!

    REPENT, REPENT, REPENT!!!

    CONSIDER YOURSELVES WARNED!!!

Faith is important as is prayer. God is and all should want him in their lives. Faith brings peace. At least the Catholic Faith should be an instrument of peace.Guns are no protection they are weapons of death. If everyone had a gun they would use them. There would be more deaths like these not less. A gun is a weapon for the final say in a conflict,a final fatal one,at that. The right to bear arms is coupled with the right to form a militia if the country is under attack. It does not mean that everyone should or can have a gun, especially a concealed weapon like a pistol, just try getting on an airplane with a gun. It is not practical to carry a gun. Heaven help anyone who even uses it in self defense.

Deacon, these were exactly my thoughts. Empathy, yet in hope that the deeper reality of the 3000 who lose their lives each day in senseless violence will awken us.

My first thought was this as well. A freind that decided along with his wife to abort thier third child, was totally outraged for these killing if these children. He even said his kids mean the world to him. If so then why did money and lifestyle come before the life of his third child? I pray this will wake people up to the value of every life. I pray that this may be the turning point in America towards pro-life. I pray that our President is awakened from his errors and finds our Lord Jesus as his only answer to his aching soul.

Even when we use science we seem to have no moderation and little respect for family rights. The Government decided that they had to do all their tests to identify these children before the parents could see their children. We seem intent on making our interest in science preempt our common sense. If one of those children were mine ,I would want to see him immediately and I dare say, With God's help, I can face the evil I would see when I encountered the scene.
