Man in the Arena: Stand With, Pray For and Learn From, Bishop Salvatore Cordileone Comments
He showed genuine remorse for his actions and asked forgiveness of those whom he disappointed. In an age which is truly shame-less, he admitted that he felt shame! Finally, as a man of real "nitty-gritty" faith, the kind forged in fire, he asked the Lord to pull good - even out of our mistakes. Now that's the kind of real, human, and sincere response which should come from from a mature Christian. Continue Reading

Deacon Keith:
Your article is very beautiful. I agree 100%. Thank you for your beautiful words. I have heard that Cardinal George once said or wrote: our culture permits everything and forgives nothing.
Dear Deacon Keith...only your unadulterated optimism could turn such a disastrous story into a good moral lesson and showing a more human side of the clergy. An error in judgment is called imprudence which is often sinful in nature. If the good archbishop elect was fully drunk, then he committed a mortal sin. Driving on top of this only aggravates the offense. I know that many of us have had a few too many in our day. And if I was ever chosen to lead the SF archdiocese, I would probably drink too much as well. But the bottom line is that this is a public relations disaster of the highest order that will be used by the enemies of the Church for years to come. It will cripple his attempts to clean out that Augean Stable for years to come. The act of imprudence alone clearly shows that he is not ready for such an exalted and challenging role. St. Thomas Aquinas suggests that any bishop to be chosen as such should be in the illuminative stage of the spiritual life. And yet this cleric, to paraphrase his mother, just kept drinking more and more wine? If he were a Republican candidate for president like Romney, it would mean the end of his campaign and the end of his career. But you are attempting to tell us that it is but a building block or just another step in his journey? The only answer, especially in today's environment, is resignation. Bishop O'Brien of Phoenix once killed a man while driving. This could have been the new archbishop elect of SF.
Arch-Bishop Elect Salvatore did reflect a simple message of Jesus 'Be Truthful" in whatever circumstance, Fear not & Be Humble, for God is truth..
