Cardinal Dolan's Response to the Al Smith Dinner Reaction Calls for Change Comments

The approach in the words and tenor of some of the articles, blog posts and commentaries on the Al Smith Dinner reflected a phenomenon I have referred to in the past as the "Catholic circular firing squad". It is too often present in this age of blogs, apps, social media and instant access to media. Some Catholics seem intent on figuratively shooting at other Catholics with hurtful words while the new Rome of a decaying Western culture burns ... Continue Reading

I think one factor some of you are not considering is the scandal that is created by politicians who fail to deliver on these social issues. We can talk all we want about the reasons why, but let's face it, abortion has been around for 40 years almost completely unabated and the train for gay marriage has been steadily gaining steam for a long time. Election cycle after election cycle we catholics are asked to vote our faith and the majority of us do. But then we completely wash our hands of it because when the next election cycle comes and the evil is still with us, we hold no one accountable. Seems to me we have a disconnect between what is expected of the Catholic voter and what is expected of catholic politicians. We say that nothing is more important than life, but somehow we accept that the economy, wars and whatever other nonsense our politicians are pursuing is more important. Another election cycle comes and nothing changes. We have accepted a status quo regarding the culture of death.

There are many voters who just do not take these guys seriously anymore, let alone the millions of people who don't even vote. I really could take all of this seriously if the moment after the election we began putting on the pressure to actually get things done in this regard. If we believe the family is the most important unit in our society, then we should prove it. We should prove it by our action after the election and having the courage to fire those who don't deliver. But we won't. We'll elect Romney and the social issues will fall off the radar until the mid-terms as they always do. Reversal of the Mexico city policy and a bold proclamation we'll re-defen the defense of marriage act, that will be it. Abortion mill will still go to work every day right under our noses. These are easy because they don't require any political courage and no one really has to put their political fortunes on the line.

If Romney is elected, I would challenge this website to begin a counter of sorts of how many babies are lost on his watch. Let's see if we get anything more than the reversal of the Mexico City policy. Planned parenthood I drive by everyday seems to fair well during Dem and GOP seasons, I'll be curious to see how they do in the next administration.

Judy: Thank you. I just felt like it had to be said. I'm surprised the monitors let it go through You are right. Remember what the Blessed Mother told the children of Fatima? She said "Souls fall into Hell like snowflakes." "Asumption" of salvation is a sin in itself. Some people think that they can do anything they want because by the death of Jesus on the cross, the are saved. Nothing is further from the "truth." God bless you, my friend.

Stephen round: You are absolutely right but what I said, had to be said. If the above topic of "Truth is Truth" had been a topic at the time of my posting, I would have put it there. God bless.

KarlVDH: We DO only have one man in Jesus and He would expect us to fight for the right of freedom of religion. AND, R/R are the only candidates we've got right now to see that freedom of religion prevails. While not being the perfect candidates (no one is) Jesus would expect us to do our Catholic duty and vote out the Marxist/Communist administration. Like I said, you are fooling no one, ESPECIALLY Jesus. God bless.

Well, I'm glad I'm not fooling anyone, JoAnn, because what I'm saying is sincere. What aren't you getting? Putting Romney in isn't "better" than having Obama in. Neither of them ought to be a Catholic's choice. And you may have decieved yourself or been decieved into thinking there's really a difference between them, but at the end of the day, NEITHER of them ought to be seen as "our man." We're supposed to have One... Jesus.

Jo Ann, I Applaud your posts of 1 Day ago and 14 hours ago. Bravo! And Amen! We need Good Catholics like you who are wise with knowledge and Not afraid to speak for Jesus. Watching Today's Homily, the priest spoke of "so many who have error in their souls"; how most people think everyone will go to heaven, when the fact is, "their are few who will be saved"; also on the latter point, "because there are not enough souls to offer up or pray for them or the souls in purgatory".This went with Today's Reading as you know, about one not knowing when Our Lord will come. How We should always be prepared.
Do Not Be Afraid to speak the Truth that is Jesus, my sister. God Be With You...

KarlVHD, and Vance, WOW! Reading your posts, I think you both need a bit of clarity?
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord".
I think that these words are what you both mean. And, as for "my own house" that means voting for Romney/Ryan. No one said they were perfect. It is a waste of time and futile to compare them to the past. We may think we could or should have someone better to represent us and the people of America. But we don't. And Obama 4 more years is a disaster! R/R of the Rep. party, certainly did not have the upbringing in the values of socialism, communism, or Marxism in their resume, so it surely couldn't be worse. The so called "anointed one" Does have those three applications in his resume. Who would Jesus have you vote for?
Just on THAT alone, is enough to vote the R/R ticket. That does not even take into consideration Freedom of Religion, etc. Just This information alone should be enough for anyone to vote the R/R ticket. Even those w/o in depth knowledge of politics. Peace....

The blog has idigressed from focus.Mind-The issue-Cardinal Dolans attendence at the dinner-I dissent to his opinion-He does not belong thier.Who is a cafeteria catholic and who is a good Catholic not the issue. The candidates are both unnaceptable as to Catholic ethics and the Cardinal is well advised to make this clear by his refusal to attend. The spin Doctors will reconfigure it as something other than what it is.He does a wrong act with a right motive.

I agree a lot with KarlVDH. Vance, we've been hated around the world for a while now. Obama's administration is no different in that regard.

KarlVDH: You're not fooling anyone. "God is not absent in the affairs of man. To do nothing in the face of evil is evil itself. To not stand, is to stand. To not speak is to speak. God will not hold us guiltless." Dietrich Bonhoefer. Not voting is voting for your man Obama. But remember, God knows our hearts. You're not fooling Him either. Oh, and by the way, do some more research on Romney. You might be surprised in what you learn. God bless.
