A Catholic Hooray for Chick-fil-A: Stand in Solidarity for Marriage on August 1st Comments
Chick-fil-A is under assault because their President publicly affirmed their company support for true marriage and the family and society founded upon it. Dan Cathy expressed his deeply held religious convictions to the Baptist Press and literally - all hell broke loose among some new Cultural Revolutionaries. Next Wednesday, August 1, 2012, I intend to eat a Chick-fil-A sandwich and participate in the National Day of Appreciation for ... Continue Reading

The main issue here is ChickFilA is being accused of discrimination simply because its owners believed in traditional Christian definition of marriage. ChickFilA never said it will not allow gays to enter its stores. In fact ChickFilA has already stated in media it will continue to serve everyone who patronize its stores. [If ChickFilA will not allow gays to enter its stores, I will never set foot in any of its stores ever.] I believe in God. So now, I am discriminating against all atheists? Don't we have the right to express our own beliefs in public without being accused of discrimination or bigotry? But the more serious concern about this whole issue of gay marriage being pushed by LGBT groups is future legislation that may trample on our religious freedom as what Obamacare has done (see Newland's Hercules Industries story in this website). Pretty soon, some of our Catholic orphanages may be forced to close because they will refuse to give an orphan to a gay couple for adoption. This is just one example. Who knows where else it will lead. Of course, we love (and we should love) our gay brothers and sisters in the same way we love our other non-gay brothers and sisters most especially when they openly lead a sinful life. We pray and offer sacrifices for their conversion because we believe we should "love the sinner, but hate the sin". As for their legal rights as couples, why can't they just call it legal union instead of marriage and give them the same rights, inheritance, visitation, etc. - except rights that will force others to violate their religious beliefs (like forcing Catholic orphanages to give them a child). I pray to God for enlightenment for all. [The Glories of Divine Grace by Fr. M. Scheeben a good book for enlightenment]
I am outraged at those who are blasting CFA and us for our beliefs. And why do commercial entities have to tell us that they are gay marriage promoters? Just sell your product and leave homosexuality out of it. Why are THEY shoving their agenda at us? Don't buy from those people. No more Kermit, Starbucks ($$$ for bad coffee anyway), and anyone else who feels they need to tell me their agenda. We really don't want to know what you think.
In all honesty who really cares what a fried chicken place thinks?! You are better to worry about this place clogging your arteries than their opinion of marriage. BTW, I am a Mass attending, cradle Catholic who fully supports all marriage, gay or otherwise. The way I look at it is love is love. Just look at the heterosexual divorce rate; certainly nothing to be proud & what does it say about "traditional" marriage? I have been in a "traditional" marriage for 29 years & have raised two Catholic sons; I think I am in the minority here. There are far more single parent homes than traditional, in my opinion. Really, I think people should admit that they are homophobic & racist & be done with it. All of this has very little to do with "traditional" marriage, it has much more to do with hate & power, if you ask me. Try loving your brother as Jesus asked us to do & you will live a much happier existence. Hate is exhausting, love is no effort at all.
Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner next Wednesday for me and my family.
Bigotry in all its forms should be vanquished, and the Catholic Church should defend gays against discrimination, just as they stood up for blacks during the civil rights movement. You're on the wrong side of history when you side with homophobes and the Ku Klux Klan. Jesus told us to love our brother as ourself, and not to judge him. Deacon, you should be ashamed of yourself. As marriage confers benefits from the state (inheritance law, visitation rights in hospitals, etc) this is an important issue that if mishandled, will lead to more pain and suffering. Is that God's will?
In the darkness shines a small light.
Awesome article. Great points. As a 34 year old catholic I stand with the cathy family on affirming marriage between man and women as a unit in which to raise children they have been blessed with the the creator. About time we christians got our act together and actually started defending ourselves against the onslaught og a secular goverment hellbent on taking all religion and spitiuality out of everday life. God bless you all that hear the call to stand up for family rights and values!
Left wing ideology often avoids civil debate of moral issues by drawing attention away from the arguments with name calling and generalizations (Christians are bigots, hate-mongers, anti-women, anti-progress, anti-medicine, etc.) and focuses instead on the alleged "fears" of their opponents while claiming the ethical high ground without ever having to prove a point. It's an old ad hominem tactic that avoids logic and degenerates into one way, vitriolic accusations thereby shutting down rational discussion.
Certainly and unfortunately there has always been mistreatment of homosexual persons by hypocrites in society masquerading their wrath against the sinner with imitation righteous indignation of sin. But many people of good will, compassion, and conscience who believe in the just treatment of all persons with dignity and respect, yet who also feel that the common good of children and society would be affected negatively by the blind redefinition of marriage by big government are cast off as ignorant fascists without having any chance to defend themselves.
Tolerance is not a two way street in this sense; in fact the so-called tolerance touted by the "liberal" mind-set is not tempered with any other kind of virtue at all (not prudence, temperance, etc.). Rather it calls for conformity to a certain ideology without question through peer and societal pressure rather than appealing to civil discourse.
The position of the church on the issue of same-sex unions is based on arguments appealing to reason and the natural law, not just appeals to divine revelation alone. But it's too bad Chic-fil-A, a company with integrity, got caught in the middle of sensationalistic cultural wars which they never intended to be a part of in the first place. Even the Catholic Church has been taking hits on its teaching because of this media attention with one person I encountered saying that the Pope's defense of marriage is invalid because he is "a celibate 85 year old" implying that he cannot distinguish right and wrong or relate to human experience because he is old and not married. Who are the real bigots we must ask.
I find it very interesting that even the ACLU, normally no friend of tradition in any form, especially when it relates to religion, says that those who resist Chick-fil-A because of Mr. Cathy's publicized support of Godly marriage are guilty of discrimination that will not stand a court test. Could've knocked me over with a feather when I read that. It takes egregious discrimination of the worst sort to get the ACLU to abandon its leftist core constituency even to speak out in defense of tradition and truth.
Clarion call for the members of the militant church to come out of their "barracks" and join the battle with prayers, novenas, rosaries, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, daily masses, regular confessions and worthy Holy Communion. All of which are the least we can do to save our nation from moral decay and collapse. In addition, let's all support businesses that comply with our Christian beliefs and morals (like ChickFilA, Newland's Hercules Industries). Then, Nov 6, 2012 is D-Day to determine our nation's and our children's future. May the Lord hear our cries!
