Obama: 'If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen' Comments
U.S. President Barack Obama made some bold statements at a speech in Roanoke, Virginia. Many of the statements fly in the face of the notion of the American self-made man and the concept of the American success story. One chief quote is "If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." Continue Reading

Baseball player hits a home run and points up to heaven. Sure, he hit the ball a mile but he recognizes that there is at least one other who gets the credit. We do not know if he points to heaven to recognize God, or a deceased parent or grandparent or all the above. But we know he believes that he did not hit that ball all on his own. Why is it then an inventor makes a product that changes the world he gets to believe he did it all on his own? Sure Ford made cars, but really it was the workers in the factories that made them and the sales people who sold them. Who educated Henry Ford? Were his parents or grandparents or perhaps an uncle an influence on him? Bill Gates? Steve Jobs? Even Einstein went to school. Point is we all stand on the shoulders of giants. No-one does this alone. And if you are truly Catholic, you believe this. What Mr Obama said was said perfectly. If you do not understand this, you really need to reexamine your faith.
Actually Judy, votes by the American people put Obama in the White House. That US consistution is the darndest thing.
He's forgetting that the taxes that built roads and bridges and taught children were extracted by force from producers, and often wasted in governmental inefficiency. He's also forgetting that private, voluntary efforts can build roads and bridges and educate children, too, and more efficiently most of the time. He's also forgetting that businesses do pay it forward to future generations in many ways: through voluntary giving, through the training and on-the-job learning they provide in jobs, through the goods and services they provide, and through the invention and improvements they make as they go along, spurred by market forces.
I have a house . I didn't build it. I buy groceries at a grocery story and I had nothing to do with the way the products I purchased were produced. I didn't vote for President Obama last election and I won't in the next, but if he wins,I can't stop him or his democratic cronies from completely ruining the country. We will all get the government that we deserve,Unfortunately! So what does that have to do about small business. Small business exists for customers and need the support of those customers to survive. Politicians need the support of those that vote for them and give them money for their political campaigns. So is there any one in the country that got rich,or elected to a political position on their own? Of coarse not,we either get rich by serving others effectively or poor through our in-effectiveness. So what is the childess point that this current President is trying to make and so what? Our lives and fortunes are interdependent upon one another. President Obama makes no political points by putting down the rich or small business people. The point he makes is only to make himself look ignorant and quite frankly,DUMB.
"THE AMERICAN DREAM WILL TURN INTO THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, IF THE PEOPLE MAKE THEMSELVES SLAVES TO THE GOVERNMENT." Dwight D. Eisenhower
The words were poorly chosen, and in some cases have been taken out of context completely so as to lose their intended meaning. I am no fan of President Obama, but I do get what he was saying here. Somewhere along the way, we all have benefited from the efforts and investments of others. Yes, there is a great deal of "sweat equity" involved in almost all endeavors that produce wealth - but, by the same token, we as Catholics are obliged to acknowledge our solidarity with others and the universal destination of goods as God intended. What the rightful role of the federal government is in administering these things is open for debate - but we can't ignore our faith's teachings on our interconnectedness as human beings.
RS, that was beautifully put and I agree wholeheartedly. Let us not become so tied to "conservative" politics that we embrace the libertarian leanings becoming more and more influential these days.
RS: Your post prompted two reactions: What? I Hope you do not expect some of us to fall for that! Or, I apologize for having analyzed your post so horribly wrong.
First attention: Ayn Rand. I will not judge all the good and bad that she did, but she certainly is Not a woman's role model! Am I wrong to think that she and Obama would have been great comrades?
To go on, certainly, what you say is good and true. The One Triune God has indeed given Everything to everyone!
But to succeed in business...remain true to the Faith...that takes more! You sound like you have not been there. Vance does. The Government takes so much (I"m speaking All levels) it is hard sometimes to keep employees working! Especially in this NO JOB ECONOMY. You know, the Only Good job, is a Government Job. Obama NEEDS OUT!
May I suggest you read Jo Ann's post as well. To conclude, I do not wish to rub anyone wrong way who does have a government job. You are lucky. Be thankful you have it. I am trying to put across, how hard it is in the Faithful private sector at times, depending what your job is, to keep it going. Especially hit are our youth, Who graduate college with no jobs on the near horizon. "Sacred Heart Of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray For Us".
Brent: Taken out of context? The president knows exactly what he says, why he says it, and how he says it. Everything he says is deliberate. He is a practiced Chicago lawyer politician who received an A+++ in Rhetoric. After all, that is what got him the White House.
Blessings
"Somebody else made it happen" if, meaning that somebody to be God, is exclaiming "satan is reformed.".
While poorly stated, I get what he was saying. But the reaction is somewhat expected given that as a country we strive to be our own islands. We have no sense of solidarity with one another. We are all one body....the body has many parts....no part more important than the other. Honestly, I don't think anyone in our government structure, currently in office or running, cares one lick about small business. Small business doesn't fund campaigns. Until things change, their focus is 100% on the big guys.
