Should A Christian Support Obama? Comments
Dear Friend, I know we disagree on politics. We don't have to agree on political issues, but since you chose to reprimand me by stating that as a Christian I should not say the things I say about Obama, I must firmly disagree. Respectfully, I must prove that you are wrong in your assertion that being a Christian means you must like everyone. Continue Reading

Theresa H., there is a lot that we should object to with Obamacare. But have you actually looked closely at what the GOP is recommending for Medicare? For your mom, I would surely support the GOP plan because it leaves her healthcare unchanged. But for every person under the age of 55, it basically ceases to exist. Their reward, they get to continue to pay to receive no benefits or a shell of what they once were. I don't agree with the movment of medicare dollars to fund other aspects of the healthcare bill, but at least it's healthcare for healthcare. In the GOP's plan, it's cuts with no other options. At some point we need to decide as a country if healthcare is important for everyone and if so figure out a way to ensure everyone has affordable access. Seniors are a very important segment of our population to care for, but they are not the only one's that require it. If we believe that healthcare for our elderly is important, as I know we all do, then we just need to pony up and pay for it to ensure it continues. And we need to accept the fact that the income level of most seniors and those in retirment are not what they were during their working life. Medicare is there because a person will incur the majority of their healthcare expense in those years with a restricted ability to pay for it. If we believe that this is important, then we need to put our money where out mouths are and pay for it. And if we don't like the affordable healthcare act, then we need to start pressing candidate Romney on his plan for the nation because this problem isn't going anywhere.
Why has not the Pope excommunicated Nancy Pelosi, etc.? For one thing, Pelosi (and anyone like her have, in fact, excommunicated themselves already. (Some sins are "ipso facto," excommunicating via their factual commission--so to say--a loose translation!) Jesus told us there will always be scandal/temptations, but "woe to those from whom temptations [scandal] comes...." (Lk 17:1ff) No matter what the Pope or Bishops do (or don't do--it is primarily the local Bishop who would "excommunicate" someone in his diocese), some people, many people will continue doing what they want...and some people will be scandalized.... Today, with "multi-media" in our face all the time, we are all frequently exposed to scandal/temptation--unless we turn "it" off! We must not let ourselves be scandalized, neither caught up in moral relativism.... However, we may pray those very last words in the Book of Revelation: "....Amen, Come, Lord Jesus! [and] May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen." God is faithful, we can trust His Word!
Also, I understand the reason LT Horton did not want to reference the CCC (he explained it himself); I just wanted to point out to our non-Catholic friends on Catholic Online "why" the Catholic Church accepts what the Bible says about "Peter," and "why" Jesus gave us "Peter" and the Bishops (successors of the apostles) united with him--until the end of time. Yes, they are imperfect, but Jesus never said they would be perfect (though He did call all of us to "be perfect...."), but the TEACHING--that we can trust, according to His Word--and our more recent Popes have warned us about what we see happening in our society/culture--especially since Roe v. Wade!
To the point of the question/title of the article, I see the same as LT Horton!
Iri Gladfelter: Where did you get your information? Let me say this: ALL that you mentioned will Never be the same No Matter What party gets in. Thanks a lot in part to Obamacare. Thanks a lot from Obama borrowing from SS of which he had NO right to do. SS was fine on its own...read stats and Carl Rove. My mother, 83, said because of Obamacare, Medicare and (things) will never be the same. She is fit in mind and body and has lived through a lot of presidents. She has seen a lot of changes. Not that her word is Gospel, but it is her opinion. I am Sad like you that these systems have to be revamped. I do like the cost efficient laws 3 states passed though: Before one can receive a welfare check, they must be drug tested. We need to stop waste! And give to those really in need. Young and Old. Hopefully, the drug users will become rehabilitated. Blessings....
Good arguments. BTW, a baby is never a punishment, but a blessing. Identifying a baby as a punishment speaks volumes!
Now, let me ask this, why has the Pope NOT excommunicated Pelosi, Biden and others that area so called Catholics that support abortion? Until he does that, I can not take any view of the Catholic Church seriously !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the vast majority of you are saying is quite correct. However, are you prepared to fight to get the Republican President, and the Conservative Republican Representatives and Senators as they end Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid as we know it, balancing the budget on the backs - and lives - of our senior citizens? Phasing our the "social safety net" and medical care for the elderly could arguably cause a humanitarian catastrophe, as our senior citizens begin to life in poverty, and die off at younger ages than they do now.
L. T. Horton: Fantastic article! Bravo! And Theresa H., I understand what you are saying. From a Catholic perspective I agree completely. With utmost admiration and appreciation for all your posts, respectfully, I think our author was writing to a non-Catholic; who at this time in his/her life, was Only interested in what the Bible had to say, and was not Open to hearing the Truth of our CC. At least that is the way i understood it. Moving On: Your post was beautiful! Bringing out All of the further Essence and Truth that Catholics who read this board need to hear. Open Christians too! Like the ones who convert to Catholicism. Your post took Horton's article one step further. Great article! Great quote! Keep 'em coming! Prayerful Blessings...
Seems some time ago (~1990), Muslim scholars & Medical professionals got together in Kuwait, to discus when life began. The summary teaching was the Life begins at conception, when the sperm & egg unite to form a new human.
While I understand LT Horton's intent in not referring to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) to make his points, I would like to observe that there is nothing in the CCC contrary to the Bible. In fact, the CCC applies God's Word in the context of our times--according to the authority given to Peter and his successors--until the end of time. (Cf: Mt 28:16-20) To this point, one may recall Jesus' earlier words in response to Peter...: "And Peter said: 'You are the Christ the son of the living God.' And Jesus answered him, 'Blessed are you,Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven'."(Mt 16:16-29) And: "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you, rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." (Lk 10:16) God knew we would need the authority of "Peter" among us until "the end of time"--to ensure that we know and realize the moral perils to which we are exposed (all through succeeding centuries)--that were non-existent in Biblical Times, like "the pill," atomic bombs, on-line pornography, etc., etc.--all produced by a modern/hedonistic/secular culture and likened by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to "gigantic beasts of prey with their power over the media and their technical strength...." (Spirit of the Liturgy, p.137)
Well Michael, it is true that many children have been stripped of their humanity by the same thinking that motivates those who think a baby is an inconvenience. However we don't know who the children are that will suffer like you say, and if we kill them in the womb we just maybe eliminating a Mother Theresa. Neither sin is acceptable, the child who is killed or the child who is neglected. God created life and found it so precious that He took on man's nature and suffered right along side of us. No human has the right to determine which of His creations will thrive, and which because of the sins of his neighbors will not. (In the end many souls who are not nurtured well become great lovers of God and their fellow man.)
