David Jones on Why Mitt Romney's Mormonism Does Matter Comments
Ultimately, politics is about winning. If Republicans continue to lose Presidential elections, elections which they should have won, maybe, just maybe, they will finally wake up. Let us pray this occurs. It is time for the Republican establishment to stop giving lip-service to the dignity of the unborn. They must stop endorsing and supporting weak (or nominal) Pro-Life Presidential candidates. Continue Reading

@ Father Herold - Father, there's more wrong with Obama then just his radicall pro-abortion policies. He's also, in radical opposition to the church's teaching on subsidiarity. The entire purpose of JP2's trip to Poland was to teach that control of programs and resources should be as close to the people as possible. Obama's programs clearly favor centralized power at the highest level. I also think his policy on abortion is a clear indicator on his general though on the dignity of the human person. This reflects in the 4000 page health care law that was passed, that he is in favor of. If you read parts of this law, there are clearly panels of people who make decisions about how much care someone shoudl be given based on their age and what they have. As Catholics, we don't make this distinction, all life is precious. I also think his policies on taking care of the poor are errant. I realize that most favor the democrats in this area, but if you look at what they are really doing, I don't see the poor changing. While Christ said the poor will always be with you, He didn't say we would rotate the poor and make the poor independent while a new poor comes in. Instead, the programs the federal government practices makes people dependent and turns them into voting blocks. I'm not a huge fan of the republicans either, but this all goes back to subsidiarity. The help the poor needs should come from the local churches, the local governments and local programs and food pantries, and then lower the taxes so people can put more of their money into their local community. I beleive this line of though is in perfect alignmnet with Catholic social teaching. Power must be as local as possible. no?
This article’s suggestion that abortion is acceptable to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or to the Mormon people, is totally wrong. For example, here is what the Church says about abortion on its website LDS.org:
“Human life is a sacred gift from God. Elective abortion for personal or social convenience is contrary to the will and the commandments of God. Church members who submit to, perform, encourage, pay for, or arrange for such abortions may lose their membership in the Church.”
I cannot see how this author could have all the contact with Mormons that he claims to have had and then imply that Mormons are not pro-Life.

To claim that Mitt Romney is serious, devout Mormon is not credible. If
the man can alter his moral opinion for political purposes, it does not stand
to say that he is steadfast in any system of thought, even if he is a high priest
and has donated great sums to his so-called church, as is demonstrated
by those in many christian churches, the practice is still nominal and expedient only.
Wht bring him down? If only our current president's heinous pro-choice ideology
could be altered....
@Rob. Rob, look at the article about Romney's Mormonism by Fr. Longenecker. Notice the pic or Mitt looking over his shoulder. Looks a little satanic to me. Anyway, it's hardly flattering. You may not have been around during the Nixon years. You couldn't find a picture of him that did not make him look oily. Don't even talk to me about the pictures of George Wallace. You couldn't find a picture of him without a scowl. Jeeze, just look at the wiki article about him - even THERE. He looks like your girlfriend's father after you bring her home 2 hours late and drunk. But man, oh man, could that guy make a speech. Saw him at the K of C hall in my hometown in MA in 1976 when he was running for president. This guy gave a barn burner from a wheelchair with NO notes. When it came to speechifyin' few men were his equal.
@the Mormons defending their faith on this website. I don't blame you a bit. If the tables were turned, I'd be doing the same thing. So, how about this suggestion: You get a representative of your faith to call the Deacon and ask him to accept an article explaining just what Mormons believe. The Deacon, or someone versed in Catholic theology, could ensure that all important doctrinal differences are explained. I mean all the big stuff, like Jesus' origins and relation to the Father and Holy Spirit, Marriage in heaven, Kolob, etc. What do you say. It would go a long way toward smoothing things out on this website, anyway.
Aren't these articles written for Catholics in regards to their vote? The Catholic vote?
I look for a strong pro-life record in a candidate's history; one with absolute total conviction to the moral law! Not someone who makes compromise after compromise. Mitt deeply disappoints me in these areas and Obama has certainly proven our religious freedom is his to take as well as the unborn! So, I am left to vote the lesser of the two evils. Honestly feel I don't have much to choose from. I am left to chose which candidate has less blood on his hands!
I'm baffled with all these retorts and defenses from our Mormon friends. Do you ever wonder about Mitt's past pro-choice stance? "In his 'heart of hearts', rape victims were entitled to emergency contraception"! So, tell me pro Mitts, why do two wrongs make a right here?? If this blob of tissue is nothing less than human, what is it then? Jeez, what would be the stance on 'when life begins' if Mitt Romney was your modern day profit? Its time to put subjectiveness behind and look at it objectively and see truth for what it really is. "You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb." Psalm 139
Judging by the amount of pro-LDS apologetic emails, LDS members are keeping vigil at www.catholic.org and all carefully studying Catholicism :). Seriously speaking though, the issues David Jones raises are very important and relevant. Hiding our heads in the sand from the facts or defending Romney through the "lesser evil" argument, by saying Obama is worse, is simply not sufficient for reasonably intelligent individuals. What each of us should do is evaluate the candidates on total merit, on their beliefs, and then decide. Like it or not, LDS beliefs are a large part of who Mitt Romney is, and avoiding this discussion now will only backfire later in the campaign. And having a Catholic-LDS discussion is unlikely to resolve anything. From a Catholic theological point of view, anyone who believes in multiple Gods (as the Mormons unabashedly do) is not a Christian. Having said that, it is a free country and Catholics can not stop LDS members from feeling like Christians. And for all we know, God is indeed on the planet Kolob and Catholics and other Christians are wrong. However, all that should still not be a discriminatory fact against Mitt Romney. As I said before, don't vote against Romney because he is a Mormon but do vote for a candidate whose total philosophy and beliefs are clear and acceptable to you.
Without question I am prolife. Without question I am a practicing Catholic woman. In that instance I have to say that reading other document on Mormonism I have to say in good conscience I would not vote for Romney.
Let me inform those who did not mention it but the Mormon faith is closer to paganism than Christian. Why so? They believe in several different 'Gods', and Godesses. An example, they believe in a Father God and Mother Godess. I believe in one God. They see the trinity as three seperate entities.
Something the church forgets about is Romney's stance on cutting programs needed by the disabled, elderly, and the poorest of the poor is also something to concern us as loving, caring, people following in Christ's footsteps. We need to think very clearly on all of his proposals then just on abortion. The elderly, disabled, homeless and homebound matter as they are, and will be, incapable of living without government aid that they need to live. I am one of the disabled. I have epilepsy that even medication does not seem to totally control. I am incapable of working. I would die if Romney succeeds in making all of the cuts he promises to make. I encourage everyone to think that someday you may be in need of government aid but there will be none. Please extend prolife to those with incurable disablilities, and those dieing in pain of cancer. This is what will happen if he stands by his promises.
I have a question for the many Mormons who have been posting that the author doesn't know what he's talking about regarding LDS doctrine. Is it true that you believe you will become gods of your own planet if you die in a state of grace according to your church teaching? I have seen this claim and it strikes me as frighteningly like the promise of the serpent to Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Would I have a problem with a Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu taking the reigns. Our country is founded on Judeo-Christian principles. My simple answer is yes, these would bother me. And as stated earlier, the Catholic Church, including most Protestant Churches with written doctrine like a Catechism, do not think Mormonism is Christian (see my other post) given all that, this is probably our first time where we have two non-Christian candidates. I don't consider Obama Christian either. I see nothing out of him or his Church that matches with the 2000 years of teaching of the 5000 year teaching of the Judeo-Christian faith. I guess I'm left to vote for Romney based on the life issue and a few other issues.
Look, you either vote or don't. If you do, you vote for Romney or Obama. To me, neither is Christian. So what. Resolution of isssues centering around morality, economics, family life, and, without hyperbole, the future of this country are what we should be considering. Obama has by his actions and lies demonstrated he is not interested or competent in resolving problems in any of these areas. So what's the choice? If you don't vote for Romney, you are, by your lack of action, giving indirect support to Obama. That's a pretty terrible thought.
