Fr Dwight Longenecker's Sobering Reflection on 'The Coming Persecution' Comments

There will be no martial law or military in the streets. That would appear to be so un-American! The officers who enforce the mandate will be lawyers in suits bearing legal documents. The battles will be in the courtroom. The penalties will seem just to the majority of people because we are in a democracy and those who disobey the law need to be punished, for it is the law of the land, and after all, if they had not done anything wrong they ... I agree with Father that it will be nice looking lawyers with their brief cases that will enforce the mandate. I also agree that most won't care except for the recusants. There may be however, one way [people will stand up and take notice and it all depends on the Bishops of this country. I have heard over and over again how Catholic hospitals etc., will have to shut down when the mandate goes into effect. But what if every Bisho[p in this country who has a hospital or charites, etc. in their diocese, simply said no. We won't follow the mandate and we won't shut down our hopsitals etc. In other words make the bastards shut them down. Millions in fines, we won't pay. If the Bishops in this country have the balls to stand firm, it might cost the Church alot in terms of materail things, but I assure you it will awaken the conscience of a whole lot of people of the dangers to their civil right. It will unmask the facism. When parishes are put up for sheriffs sales by the government to pay for the fines, do you really think it will go unoticed? Who knows. Father you may be right. But if so and this is the first step to martyrdom, then I say bring it on. Of course this is really just a rant because we know the USCCB doesn't have the collective spiine to do something so, so , well, Catholic.Good article Father. God Bless.

Very thought provoking! I could actually see this happening in my minds eye; you already can't tell most Catholics from anyone else in our (US) society. We don't seem to live any differently than our neighbors and we certainly don't act or dress any differently. We take for granted that our freedoms are protected even as they are "updated" by our government, quietly and unobtrusively. Heaven forbid we stand up and say that our way is the only way, that a "good" person will not be joining us in our Lord's kingdom because they are not a christian, or that sometimes the popular opinion can be, and is, just plain wrong.
The United States of America was not formed to make everyone follow the same piper, but to allow all to choose their own path. Making laws that force the minority to follow the majority in our society are what our forefathers fought and died to prevent. It's what my grandfathers, father, husband, brother, cousins, and my own precious children fought to prevent. What is their sacrifice for?

Sadly, Fr Dwight's blog may not be too far off mark. I heard story on Beck today that Obama's solicitor general petitioned the supreme court to mandate that all religions/churches have their staff approved by the gov't. Thankfully they all agreed that was ludicris. And then Obama's admin.tells the bishops that there will be no comprimise and they should seek guidence from people more "enlightened"- them- as to what they should do.

    Nice huh?

Nice article Father. But now, can you write an article about Catholics, and other religious groups, who choose to follow their leaders. An article which gives us hope, instead of one of doom. I know you have it in you. I will pray that you write the article after you spend some time in prayer and thought. I look forward to seeing it on this website.

I find this article sobering, discouraging and yet written in a fictional satire dabbled with humiliating truths of the coming apocalypse, and my heart grieves for Holy Mother Church and for our Nation. And as much as this article's scenario could possibly play out in some instances, I am determined to fight this battle with whatever our Lord gives to me. The devil would have us get discouraged, but I will continue to be vocal, be informed, attend rallies for religious freedom, contact our congressman, representatives, pray, fast, and exercise my civic duty and vote this November and perhaps, God will have mercy on us, even if we are not a majority, should we remain faithful in fighting this battle, God could spare us and OB will be a one term President!

Fr, pray for me as tonight, with some anxiety I must speak up in solidarity with my priest and my bishop about my faith if need be. It is not I that force these things into the politics of my union, but with the help of a group calling themslelves catholics for marriage equality in Minnesota, telling untruth about Church teaching, I will have no choice to defend my bishop who is now in Rome most likely discussing these very things. To remain silent is to consent. There are those from within that are not only silent but attack the faith. Pray also for them
