President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast. Catholics Won't Get Fooled Again Comments
During the last Presidential campaign many Catholics were deluded by then Senator Barack Obama. His rhetoric uses language which sounds as though he agrees with Catholics on issues such as our obligation to the poor and the needy. His administration has acted in a manner which proves the opposite. The most egregious example is his failure to hear the cry of the children in the womb. Continue Reading

Please brothers and sisters in the USA do not accept the legislation even at the pain of death. As Christians and especially as Catholics it is better to obey the law of GOD which says ''Do not kill," than to obey the law of man. Rally behind your Bishops and we'll be praying for you and the American Government.
@ Josephine and Kenya: Abortion trumps everything. The two most important commandments as declared by Jesus in chapter 22 of Matthew's Gospel indicate that we are to "love God with our whole heart, soul, and mind... and to love your neighbor as yourselves." Doesn't it stand to reason then that we are to especially love those 'neighbors who are most vulnerable and defenseless?' This would include the unborn? When a political leader tells us Catholics that we must pay for abortion, and other services under the HSS edict, aren't there alarm bells going off in your head?
I would agree with David D and others above who counseled with you on reading the catechism and educating yourself on the church's position on why killing the unborn is a grave sin. As bishops of the church have pointed out to us from the pulpit within the last two weeks, we should also pray and fast on this issue. I also agree that we should always pray for political leaders. But that doesn't mean that I should always agree with them just because they are the president, or the former speaker of the house of representatives.
Rob, Do you really believe that in the short amount of time that the average church-goer attends Mass or services, that a clergy member or minister can be held responsible? What happened to personnal initiative? Wish all you want but prayer and action will make the difference. Please help by actively inquiring about what direction or action you should take, besides mobilizing the Christian/Religious vote around you. We must not surrender our freedom to worship. At all costs.
John, I actually think this mandate probably just affirms what is already happening. Do we have any statistics in regards to contraception use amongst Catholics? I understand the importance of fighting this mandate, I just wish our Church leadership cared enough about the people and actually taught them why this mandate can't stand. Is all we are going to get is strongly worded letters? Serously??? If you do not teach the people then you can't be suprised when they don't accept the teachings or disregard them. The leadership of the Chruch has been asleep at the wheel and somehow expects the government to police morality when it's the Chruch's job to teach faith and morals. This issue goes beyond Obama and goes to the heart of a lazy laity and chruch leadership that is asleep. Letters from Bishops mean nothing if it does not result in boots on the ground teaching in parishes. It's just more politics and it will get drowned out with all the other voices clamoring for attention.
I believe that the ostensible reason for Obama's ruling on mandating all employers to provide contraceptives and abortificacts to their employees is not in any way related to ensuring that these services are made available to people who would otherwise be denied them.
Rather, I believe that the actual sole purpose is to force the Christian Churches, all of them, to acquiesce in something which their doctrine describes as evil.
If successful, it will corrupt all of those believers who do not actively oppose the mandate, since acquiescence is de facto support.
It will also desensitise the faithfull to the next effort at dismissing biblical cannon in favour of secular regulation.
What was once unthinkable, quickly becomes commonplace.
In what form will the next assault upon Christian values appear, if this succeeds?
When I read in these "Comments" that "I am Catholic" and that "many of you have strict definitions of what it means to be Catholic" and that "we do not want 10 kids and believe nothing is wrong with contraception...," I fear very, very much.... Yes, indeed, none of us are perfect; to put it briefly, and to the point: "all have sinned." (Rom 3:23) But we make things much worse (we deceive ourselves and, perhaps, even others) when we espouse something as grievous as contraception--in blatant rejection of the infallible teaching of the Church--of the Pope and the Bishops united with him. (Vat. II, LG 25) This, of course, goes all the way back to "Humane Vitae," and the grand exodus of many Catholics from adherence to the teaching of Jesus. Yes, "of Jesus," because speaking to his apostles and their successors--the Pope and the Bishops united with him--Jesus said: "He who hears you, hears me and he who despises you despises me." (Lk 10:16) Such a deliberate "choice," in the line of moral relativism is, perhaps, the greatest satanic deceit of these modern times in which we live. Let us pray for one another to be delivered from the wiles of the devil who prowls about the world seeking the ruin of souls. (cf 1 Pet 5:8-9)
Our Bishops in Nevada posted this letter and I fully support it.
February 3, 2012
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:
Religious liberty is one of the freedoms we cherish as Americans. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution states that government shall not make any law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. We, the bishops of Nevada, bring to your attention a recent, alarming matter that seriously infringes on this freedom.
On January 20, 2012, the United States Department of Health and Human Services issued a new federal mandate requiring virtually all employers, including faith-based institutions, to provide insurance coverage for abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization and contraceptives. There is an exemption for churches but so narrowly framed that almost all Catholic institutions will have to pay for the coverage. The exemption applies, for all practical purposes, only if our schools, hospitals and charitable agencies hire only Catholics and serve only Catholics. As you well know, many of our institutions serve non-Catholics. For example, Catholic Charities here in our state and throughout the nation provide food, shelter and other essential services for millions of people who are not Catholic.
The issue comes down to this: through this new regulation the federal government requires the Catholic Church to spend its money in a way that forces it to violate its religious principles. In effect, it restricts our free exercise of religion.
What are the effects of this regulation? First to abide by the law would lead us to violate our moral teachings. To ignore the law would place us in violation of this Federal regulation and make us subject to fines or other consequences. To act within the narrow religious exemption would remove us from our mission to serve people who are in need and count on the social safety net we provide. None of these is acceptable for people of faith in a nation that has freedom as the hallmark of its identity. Where else will this regulation lead?
What we are asking you is to help in defending a fundamental freedom. Write or call your senator or representative in Congress. Write to the president. Share this concern with other Catholics or anyone who cherishes the freedoms upon which our nation was founded. We will suggest other action to take in the near future.
We thank you for your attention. Let us pray for one another and let us pray for our nation.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe Bishop of Reno Bishop of Las Vegas
It will be interesting to see how CINOs Catholic in Name Only support it???
Josephene ... please understand that it isn't "we" who have a strict definition of what it is to be Catholic. Holy Scripture, the infallibility of the Papacy in regard to statements of Church Dogma, the influences of writings of the Church Fathers, to name a few have provided us with that "definition". But yup ... we will try to evangelize, even our own, because not doing so risks the loss of a soul. And because of that, it should not be "Ok" with any of us that others don't believe the same things we do, or worse yet, don't believe period. God wants all souls to come to Him. To Him through His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. You can take issue with the methods we sometimes employ. We're imperfect, too, and when we're stumbling around in the dark before having our third cup of coffee in the morning, that 20 pound sledge-hammer might be mistaken for the feather-tipped stick we really were groping for to use as an evangelization aid, But please don't mistake our "zest and zeal" as anything more than it really is ... our love of you as a Sister in Christ, a child of God. For that reason, because you are faith-filled, and I would assume faith led, please read the Catechism of the Church to understand its position on contraception. You will see why it is called a grave sin. Please also do a little research and you will find that NFP has a higher rate of success in spacing (and regulating) pregnancies than artificial or chemical contraception without all of the negative spiritual, relational, and physical impacts that those methods have. I don't see the lies or distortions in these posts that you reference. I do see many hurt and angered Catholics who may be finally finding their voice. If you take a hard look at what has transpired over the last couple of years, you may find that when it comes to policies that should have been introduced, defined and enacted in accordance with, as the Church calls it, "properly formed moral conscience", there haven't been many. And while I agree with you that we should afford the respect due to our elected officials if for no other reason than the positions they hold, that respect should not lead to blind following down a path to ruin And one last thought if I may regarding what it means to live our lives as Catholics and the implications of our failure to do ... if you were building a bridge across a ravine (one that had no bottom and from which if you fell in you could never hope to escape) and you only completed 98% of the span of the bridge, would you use it and really expect to reach the other side safely? May God Bless you!
voting4life, so then explain this to me? When the economy started unraveling BEFORE Obama was elected, was Bush not pro-life enough? I must have missed those surpluses that Obama inherited or misunderstood the drive to get more people on food stamps that Bush initiated? Sorry, my mistake. While I disagree with the premise of your post, I do agree that people who voted for Obama are getting exactly what they voted for, inexperience. As far as his policies as of late, just pandering as they all do.
I see many of you speak out against the President. He can't be all things to all people. But I ask, will you then vote for the mormon? Does he lay in wait only to baptise us all in the LDS church when we are not looking? This is the stuff of nighmares.
