The Iowa Derby: In the Final Lap Rick Santorum Comes From Behind Comments
Rick Santorum is a refreshing example of moral coherence - a politician who refuses to buy the party line that one can separate out the so called "social" and "moral" issues from the economic and foreign policy issues. In fact, he will not accept the idea that morality should be confined to the walls of one's home or house of worship. Instead, he insists that America as a Nation is a "moral enterprise". He recently told one the crowds attending ... Continue Reading

Santorum is the comeback story of the year. He came out of nowhere into this murky field republican candidates, all tight in the polls but very different in character. Santorum is truly the only candidate who represents true Christian values.
No one comes back like Santorum! He's the only one who will beat back the brown come November.
To anyone who questions Mr Santorum's positions on guns and military action: Do we not have the right to defend ourselves?---both personally and as a nation? As for "cutting services to the poor," there is no where he propses that. He proposes freezes at 2008 levels. This is no cut: the budget does not have to be automatically increased (something called baseline budgetting) every year. Baseline budgetting has hidden many irresponsible spending increases for generations. Mr Santorum supports the Paul Ryan budget and proposed reforms which is thoroughly Catholic in its ability to reign in unwarranted and irresponsible spending while maintaining and servicing those who do in fact need help. The Catholic principle of subsidiarity is evident throughout Mr Santorum's positions. It is about time that candidates take this principle seriously and we the people, especially Catholics, come to understand it.
Rob, RS says he is organised in other states. Nobody thought my congressman could defeat a guy (a democrat who I have voted for in the past) who had this area locked up for thirty some years. But real grass roots support was built up around him and we were tired most especially of the lies about Obamacare. The old elephants barely gave him any support until the very end. Now they call me looking for money. I don't think they are listening when I tell them Romney is too much of a socialist and a phoney. (interesting comments he made about Supreme Court picks today. That tells me a lot-but Repubs just blow it off, like they did when Juliani first was in the running. One of the legs would be completely ripped away with those guys). And a side note. If my child were to die in a neonatal intensive care unit. I would want a nurse taking care of my baby just like Mrs. Santorum. Death, dying and healing is more than a sanitised hospital room. (Deacon, how about a little something on the true meaning of the dignity of caring for the sick and dying and the beautiful history of our faith that goes along with it). Living in the NICU with my firstborn for a few weeks was a real eye opener. Mr. Colmes, honestly you should put some time in there; sometimes living well, no matter how short the life, means dying well. Mrs Santorum truly is fighting for the little guy. The bond between mother and child runs deeper than deep. Fulton Sheen had it right what he said about it.
Re: Rick Santorum
I dont usually go for or against a candidate endorsement on these opinions but I endorse Rick Santorum. I think he has the potential to go for the Presidency just as anyone of us would have shot at it male or female.
After reading opinions about all of the candidates and our present leader Barack Obama, Im sorry but he couldnt do any worse than anyone now or in the past. The Presidency has never been easy especially since the time of Roosevelt and from the time of the first President George Washington.
Each President has had their ups and downs on all levels. This is a country that gives the underdog a chance. I think all the Presidents have had both bad and good sides to their Presidency's. Not anyone who was in this posistion hasnt had to contend with problems on all levels. This job has gotten more and more difficult and will do so in the future. No man or woman who takes this leadership will not have these problems in one form or another.
May God, the Mother and the Son and the Holy Spirit love and guide this country in good times and bad. Peace.
Marianna Sylvia: I want to correct one thing. I meant to say naive young AND old voters. In other words, all voters who do not educate themselves about our history and the political history of the candidates. God bless.
Marianna Sylvia: I have been a Catholic all my life. I am not a young naive voter, I was born before WWII. I have watched the destruction of this country by people who do not educate themselves before they exercise one of the most important right that they have. There are 5 non-negotiable teachings of our Church that we have to consider before going into the voting booth. We are to vote against abortion, embryonic stem cell research, euthanasia, cloning and gay marriage. To vote for anyone who is in support of any one of these teachings is a grave sin. I would like to suggest to you that you get deep into the history about Islam . There is a book/CD out there by William Federer called "What Every American Needs to Know about the Qur'an." It is a history of Islam and the United States. Mr. Federer is a Catholic historian and can tell you the whole history of Islam from its beginning. You will get a very clear picture of what the US has been and is up against regarding Iran and the Middle-East. After that, get the book/CD "The Catholic Response to Islam" by Monsignor Michael Witt. Monsignor Witt is a Church historian and can tell you the history of our Church from the time Jesus founded it. If you read both of these books/CD's by election time in November, you will have no confusion as to who to vote for. If you have any questions, let me know. Happy reading. God bless.
I appreciate everyone's comments and I read these columns and comments in order to learn.
Having said that, I really need help in deciding who to vote for. Although I would really like to support Santorum, I cannot agree with his stances on guns, military action, cutting services for the poor, and failure to protect earth's environment, which we were given to steward. I whole-heartedly agree with his stances on gay marriage and abortion, however. I am an Independent voter and I always try to vote for the candidate who most closely matches my ideals.
I am so frustrated that to vote for a pro-life and pro-marriage candidate means a vote for a pro-war, pro-big business, pro-gun, pro-capital punishment, pro-pollution candidate. I just don't feel good about this. Does anyone else feel like I do? What is the answer? I'm in danger of giving up voting, although I do believe that it is our duty to vote. And I really would hate to see Catholics not vote, as I think our beliefs really do belong in the public square.
Does RS have any organization outside of Iowa? If he wins tonight does he have any shot at competing? He will not have time to do what he did in Iowa. And I can't determine if his efforts are what is driving his recent rise in the polls or the implosion of both Cain and Gingrich. The only other implosion we might see is Perry, but that won't be enough to carry the day, particularly if he doesn't have an organization outside of Iowa.
American politics is so much more interesting!
St. Francis of Assisi gave us a good example when he visted the Sultan of Baybylon.
Trying to win people over by military force is not going to win peace.
As a potential leader, Santorum does not inspire any confidence in me.
