Week Four of the New Translation of the Mass - So How Are We Doing? Comments

We've heard about the new translation for a long time. Over the last several months, training classes, meetings, instructional Masses and other venues have been used to ready English-speaking Catholics for the New Translation. Now on the other side of this introduction, four experts pause and reflect on what the Church has just experienced and will continue to experience. The new translation has definitely re-focused the person in the pew with ... The bishops made a mountain out of a mole hill. For much of the unchanging parts of the Mass the bishops could have done the same as was done with the Latin, and simply gone back to using the very good pre Vatican II translations. That would have been fine for the Gloria and the Creed, etc. I really wonder how many of today's bishops have much of a grasp of the Latin at all, not to mention a knowledge of the liturgy before Vatican II.

Penny I am from the vatican11 era I was there when they ripped out all those beautiful alters.what do you think the pioneers thought I saw many off them weeping and their predictions all came through about the "Abomination of Desolation in the Holy places. Your comment the Church should try bring back the youth. that is what Vatican 11 was about swing open the doors bring in the banjos, guitars, all types of insanity. Well the youth didn't come. Your daughters comment that God would not care about what is said. Our Lord gave us the our Father prayer even that has been changed. Wake up and study what has transpired since 1964. Look at a site called "TRADITION IN ACTION" this will show you why the Holy Father wants to return to the truth.

What happened that the English speaking world had the translation wrong in the first place? My former parish priest said that 40yrs. ago some of the translators didn't like the way things were said so they changed them to say what they wanted instead. Why did the Vatican allow that to stand? The words of the Mass are of paramount importance. Why should a few clerics, several years ago, have been allowed to tamper with the translation? What a terrible thing. If this new translation is important, and it is, then why wasn't it important some 40yrs. ago?

I personally do not like the changes. I was able to really contemplate on what I was saying before and it made sense to me and now I have to concentrate so much on getting the words right that the meaning has been lost . I absolutely dislike the word consubstantial in the creed and I feel most people have no idea what it means besides being difficult to pronounce. It totally throws off the balance of the Creed. What was wrong with the liturgy before? Why fix something that was not broken. The younger generations do not remember Latin and so this change seems unneeded. I personally think the Catholic church needs to be trying to bring more young people into the church and I worry that this is another example of how ancient the mass seems to many. My 25 year old daughter happened to be with me in church the Sunday that this was implemented. Her comment was "do they think GOD cares what words we use or is it more imortant that we are here and worshiping?" I tend to agree.
