Ask Dr. Denton: It's Lent. Can You Explain the Effects of Fasting? Comments
Prayer and fasting leads us to a deeper closeness to God and to peace and beauty within. Interestingly, fasting also gives our body a time to clean out the weight of a heavy year. Fasting on a purely physical level does have some significant and wonderful benefits. The benefits of fasting are not just about the physical world, they are also about the spiritual world. Fasting is about becoming identified in solidarity with the poor. Continue Reading

As a child I learned to make sacrifices and give up something I really liked like candy. As an adult it seemed silly to just give up meat on days of fast or abstinence because it is not a sacrifice for me. There are fish fries and seafood "feasts." I really like fish. What kind of fast is that?
Occasionally I do a 10 day detox diet for health benefits. It it very difficult not so much just eating mostly vegetables but not to have salt, cheese or wine is the tough part. I thought I would fast all of Lent by giving up wine, sugar, pasta, meat, chicken and fish. But then I was conflicted. It felt like I was the one benefiting and not giving. Thank you for the article on fasting It clarifies the overall benefits.

Ths will aid in my lenten plans. Excellent article.
Holy season of lent is a period of profound spiritual recollection about the mystery of our salvation. Contemplating on the passion and death of Christ. It is a period of rigorous penance like mortification, fasting, almsgiving, charity, constancy in prayer.
Above all repentance and avoidance of sin which is fasting of all fasting.
thanks for the teaching and lets pray together so that this season may bring us closer to God in Jesus'name we pray.
Thank you for a great article. Fasting has been rewarding for me for many years. It toughs up your spirituality. I have become a stronger person with a better understanding of holy behavior and of a holy state of mind. Everything ties into the Gospel and Jesus Christ.
Great spiritual and physical advice .Money saved by dietary restrictions can be donated to feed the needy.
"Fasting is about becoming identified in solidarity with the poorest of the world in order to feel their hunger, their ache, their longing for sustenance. That is what compassion means." I have long thought this but I am glad finally one has come out and said it so clearly and directly.
I too look forward to the Lenten season to reconcile myself to Almighty God. It is truly sad that in America the whole season of Lent is treated just like ordinary days. Only true Christian servants of God solemnly celebrate it, that is why I always pray for the conversion of the people of the United States of America. There are so many evils prevailing in America, rampant fornication, homosexuality, pornography of all types, etc. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is returning and the process has already begun. Everyone, every human being living on this earth has to make a choice where they want to spend their eternity at. There is only one of 2 places, and you know what I mean.
