Dr. Janet Smith: Condoms and Pope's Book, 'The Light of the World' Comments
'In the case of homosexual sexual activity, a condom does not act as a contraceptive; it is not possible for homosexuals to contracept since their sexual activity has no procreative power that can be thwarted. But the Holy Father is not making a point about whether the use of a condom is contraceptive or even whether it reduces the evil of a homosexual sexual act; again, he is speaking about the psychological state of some who might use condoms. ... When one is a teacher of many one must always be clear not ambiguous!..Listen Johnny, when you come to an intersection, cross when you feel its ok..then again dont let the traffic bother you I am sure the drivers will stop..then again you have a right to do what you feel is best for you..then again you may want to wear a helmet ,it might help you when you get hit.then again ,,,then again.....I recall not wanting to eat this lumpy oatmeal as a kid and hearing the story..'ahh,but some starving kid in india would love it' and I would murmur to myself, then Ill sent this stuff to him!...if parents are as vague as this latest pontiff ,then their will be no more generations to befuddle..sigh..
Dr Smith's analogy with a person robbing a bank using a gun with or without bullets is very powerful. I urge every Catholic who is challenged about the meaning of Pope Benedict's words to use this analogy and thereby help to stop the idiotic interpretations that the media are trying to foist on us.
Homosexuals can not contracept - to keep from having a baby together. Homosexual acts are a grave (mortal) sin (-CCC 2357-2359). Committing murder (giving another AIDS) would just add an ADDITIONAL mortal sin on the man's soul. Either way, one mortal sin is sufficient to send one to Hell if left unrepented at the time of death.
Thinking about what Helen Hawkins says here, it may just be that the pope saw this answer as a way to get through the fog of ignorant commentary that today's media seem to specialize in. Even the dullest observer would have to ask himself precisely why Benedict chose the example of a homosexual prostitute rather than some much more common situation of sexual sinfulness. Knowing the pope was talking here about condom use, it wouldn't take long for that observer, perhaps, to comprehend the essentially sterile and empty nature of any homosexual act. And from there, who knows what other truths might come to his mind?
It is truly fascinating watching the media play this game. However, things work out wonderfully good. A lot of people are going to buy this book who normally would not even know of its existance and that is truly a good outcome from this silly controversy.
