Archbishop Vigneron Exposes 'American Catholic Council', Warns Faithful Comments
'The American Catholic Council movement and its national gathering are not conducted under the auspices of the Detroit archdiocese, the universal Roman Catholic Church, or any entity or organization affiliated with the archdiocese or the universal Roman Catholic Church. Priests, deacons, and ecclesial lay ministers will want to avoid lending support to such a misguided effort. On behalf of the archdiocese, Archbishop Vigneron has asked the ... Continue Reading

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, #2035 (Dark Green cover) explains Infallibility as follows: " The supreme degree of participation in the authority of Christ is ensured by the charism of infallibility. This infallibility extends as far as does the deposit of Divine Revelation; it also extends to all those elements of doctrine, including morals, without which the saving truths offaith cannot be preserved, explained, or observed." The idea that "infallibility" only pertains to when the Pope speaks "ex cathedra" is a misrepresentation of the truth by people who either just plain don't know what they're talking about or want to mislead/waterdown/ or excuse their own infidelity! When a Bishop or even a pastor teaches us in matters of faith and morals in union with the Pope, we have an obligation to adhere to the teaching with the "assent of faith." It is also good these days for us--the laity--to read the official Catechism of the Catholic Church which is available to us from most book stores--in case we don't get all the spiritual food in matters of faith and morals that we need via our bishop or pastor.... .
IMPORTANT POSTS, you seem to be more familiar with this movement than most of those -- including myself -- who have participated in this conversation. I wonder if you could do us the service of cutting to the chase and telling us what specific outcomes or changes that the American Catholic Council is seeking to affect in the Church. What I mean by that is specific policy proposals, not just generalized statements about "more democracy." For example, are they advocating a return to the early practice of electing bishops? If not, what are they advocating?
As a 61 year old born and raised in the Catholic Church, I personally attest to the Divine move of the Holy Spirit of God through Pope John XXIII and Vatican II. Sadly, the Catholic Church only grudingly tolerated Vatican II and the Charismatic movement of the Holy Spirit in the hearts and minds and lives of the faithful. Our current Pope did everything he could to kill the Vatican II Charismatic movement, and now with the reintroduction of the Latin Mass and many other changes in the liturgy he will continue to seek to destroy any remnant of the move of the Holy Spirit through Vatican II. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is controlled by no human being. This organization is seeking to right what it's members perceive as wrongs. Sadly, they either think there is a real chance for reform or they simply are seeking to sensationalize their agenda, which is still largely hidden. The only think for real Christians who follow Christ and attend the Catholic church to do is to pray, seek the LORD's will, live in obedience to His Holy Word, and pray for the direction, wisdom, and healing of the Holy Spirit to fulfill the will of God in all of our lives, including those in the ACC.
Phillip and Barb, Both of you have brilliant points. "Follow The Money". I now have a better view of who the American Catholic Council is. They are a socio-political group with catchy phrases and deceptive lingo with an agenda to undermine and change the church to what they (Possibly George Sorros) would like it to be. Their end product would be something outside the auspice of the Bishops or Rome. History has shown us that there are two kinds of decent. The saints' decent was against Bishops and clergy who strayed outside the communion of the church. They were not about altering the church to fit their own personal agenda. The other kind of decent came from people like Martin Luther who hates the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church. Their agenda is to change the church to fit the twisted mold they want the church to be. These same people are those who are dismantling the Anglican Church. Since they are having success with the protestants, they believe they can have the same success with the Catholics.
PAUL: "any discent from this CCC is heresy." The problem with that sort of thinking is in its mechanics. Consider, if you would, this passage from the CCC's introduction: "It is meant to encourage and assist in the writing of new local catechisms, which take into account various situations and cultures, while carefully preserving the unity of faith and fidelity to catholic doctrine." It seems that the makers of the Catechism itself assumed that it required local adaptation and interpretation. Moreover, is it really for us to be self-appointed arbiters of what constitutes heresy, and what does not? The Church has ecclesiastical courts for this sort of thing, I would also suggest that this kind of "My Church, love it or leave it." attitude doesn't seem like a very Catholic one.
This thought may not seem to have any relevancy but think about it and tell me: "What's wrong with this picture"?
Last year when Congress was voting on TARP and the stimulous bill(s), I wrote to my Democratic rep. and begged him to vote against any more spending. Well he did but what I found interesting was the written letter I received in return.
He noted that my state's share was $8billion. He proceeded to list where the money was going. There was at least 2 things very wrong with his justifications for spending.
#1 the sum of the amount shown totalled $1billion.
#2 listed in his letter was an entity labelled "Catholic Charities".
Does anyone else think this smells fishy? (no pun intended)
Well I did some investigation.
Hint #1. It's not Catholic hospitals or schools or missions.
Hint #2 It deals with social justice.
The answer is.............up to us.
P.S. Do you think the Episcopalians should resent this?
"The Catechism of the Catholic Church which I approved ..... and the publication of which I today order by virture of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church's faith, and of Catholic Doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church's Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith and thus a valid and legitimate instrument of ecclesial communion." - Pope John Paul II. Any DISCENT from this CCC is HERESY.and will not be tolerated.
FOLLOW the MONEY. $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ Don't be surprised if George Soros and TIDES Drummond Pike is not helping to finance this new fake Catholic group. See "Obamas Counterfeit Catholics" by RealCatholicTV on internet. As it has been said, if they do not completely follow the Catechism of the Catholic Church, they are heretics - if ever Catholics at all.
Columba, I would suggest that there is a fundamental problem with a strategy of counterdemonstration. It's one thing to dismiss such folks out of hand, but quite another to take them seriously before they've earned the right to be taken seriously. A counterdemonstration of the kind you've described would require crushing, Glenn Beck-like turnout in order to discredit these folks. You wouldn't want to risk less, and you don't really know who is backing these folks. That requires the commitment of significant resources. And the commitment of significant resources against a foe, gives that foe credibility. It seems to me that Gamaliel gave good guidance on such matters. And the psalms give good counsel concerning whom to depend on should it be necessary to treat them as foes. And, finally, I wonder if it is wise to assume uniformity in such a movement. The rank and file of such a group are likely to be sincere, if alienated. Do you want to alienate them further if you don't have to?
Could we form a national group of Catholics faithful to the Pope and to the Magisterium and witness to our faith in Detroit on the same day as the pseudo "America Catholic Council?"
