U.S. Political Season Begins: 'Morally Coherent' Catholics Can Change this Nation Comments

Catholics are not one more "interest group" which can be polled, pandered to and bought. Our social obligation is to promote the true common good, not just use the slogan to sound "catholic" as happened in the last political cycle. We need to promote the truth as taught by the Church no matter what it is labeled in the political parlance of the hour. Our political participation must be committed to human life and dignity, marriage and the ... Continue Reading

Bulbajer: Socialism is socialism, is socialism. Put all the adjectives on it you want, it's still Socialism. And that means "government control" of something. The Constitution of the United States gave us a "limited" government which is the antithesis of Socialism. Little to no good comes of the "centralized planning" that is "government control." Putting the word "democratic" in front of "socialism" is just an attempt at making it all sound palatable. Shall I begin quoting what the Founding Fathers had to say about "democracies?" Or just leave it at our country is not a democracy but a "Republic?" Beyond that, when someone speaks of "types" of Socialism I hear the whisper of the "Deceiver."

The Deacon is absolutley right. For all those Catholics who have managed to let themselves become convinced that abortion is OK, I suggest you read the Didache. Lost for centuries until rediscovered in a monastery in Constantinople around 1883, this document dates back to the very early church in the first century AD. It is sort of a hand book the Apostles used to teach people how to live a Christian life. Click on this link and scroll down to Chapter 2. The bold print is the direct English translation and the regular print is the commentary. Note the clear and explicit instructions on abortion and infanticide. http://ministries.tliquest.net/theology/apocryphas/nt/didache.htm So, if you think abortion is OK, then you are in direct disagreement with Christ's own hand picked guys. That can't be a good spot to be in.

Mother Teresa said "A nation that kills its children has NO future." Think about it.

Thank you, Deacon Keith... We all know what Jesus would do.... He wouldn't escort the young woman to the abortion clinic.... he wouldn't say it's none of my business because it's a womans issue... He didn't say to Judas, "you're right.... that perfume its too costly.... here.... take it and sell it to give the money to the poor." He said, "The poor you will always have with you." He said, "whatever you do to the least of these (children) you do also to me."

Techwreck, true. I think that is the principle error in Liberation Theology. Socialists trust too much in the government. They trust too much in themselves.
Pete, there is such a thing as democratic socialism. It is unrelated to Marxian socialism, which is not democratic. There is more than one type of socialism. This is a fact. In practice, most of the types tend to be weaker than expected, or just plain cave in to the stronger types, like Maoism or Stalinism. But nevertheless the "well-meaning" but naive leftists are present, if they are only a small minority in most countries.

This is perhaps the most sober an succinct article on this topic. All Catholics should read and follow this article as they begin to read "voters guides" and discern for whom they should cast their precious vote. Thank you good and holy Deacon for this wonderful article! I'm sending it to everyone on my email list and I'm posting it on Facebook and Twitter too!

I shoudl have know that this was a conservative website when I read the article about Glenn Beck. I have been a Catholic all of my life and I have to say that I have never seen a less Christian man than Glenn Beck. He has preached conspiracy theories , born false witness, and destroyed careers for two years and now he wants to lead us to Christ? This website is nothing more than a shill for the Republican party. Christ was the original champion of social justice and Beck has demonized it . Christ said render unto Ceasar the things that are Ceasars and render the things that are God's unto God. KEEP RELIGION OUT OF MY POLITICS AND POLITICS OUT OF MY RELIGION.

    Deacon Fournier,
I respect your desire to change the political and social and economic climate in America but I believe we will never do it through activism. Activism is one of the tools of the secularists and once you adopt it you play into their hands and they marginalize you. In my mind teckwreck is right. The Church must return to spreading the Faith one soul at a time untill God's Kingdom and love overwhelms these syetems by the commitment each of us has for the other souls we meet during the day. Once we concentrate our efforts in the public arena we begin to seek power rather than love and unselfishness.
    God love you

Bulbajer: "Democratic Socialism?" Hmmmm, sounds like being "just a little bit pregnant!" Sorry, you either are or you're not. Same with postulating "diversified" forms of Socialism. It doesn't work. Again, 'let your yes be yes, and your no be no.'

bulbajer, A thoughtful post. Let me respond in kind.

Socialists advocate government action to solve the problems of society, and socialists generally advocate the transfer of wealth by government to help low income citizens.
However, Christ was very specific when He advocated "rendering unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's", and just as specific in directing the beatitudes at each and every one of his followers. There are no beatitudes about paying taxes for social programs. There are only beatitudes about showing the less fortunate the kingdom of God by showing them the love of Christ by our actions. Salvation is not collective! Salvation occurs through the grace of God one soul at a time.
