Obama Moves away from 'Freedom of Religion' toward 'Freedom of Worship'? Comments

Since the initially strong language on religious freedom used in President Obama's Cairo speech, presidential references to religious freedom have become rare, often replaced, at most, with references to freedom of worship. A purposeful change in language could mean a much narrower view of the right to religious freedom. Does this change of language indicate a change of policy? As Catholics, this is an area where we must remain vigilant. ... Continue Reading

The "acolytes" of the new religion of the Left are in all the liberal, environmental, atheistic organizations, from the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, to the gay-lesbian groups. Thanks to the Catholics and Episcopalians who helped sponsor so many of the Liberals' agenda items, the chickens are coming home to roost.

The word "worship" does not appear in Amendment I of the Constitution, it says RELIGION. Where are all the newspapers and big mouth Republicans? You reap what you sow. Thank you all who voted for BHO.

Interesting article. I don't doubt that Obama is playing to the anti-religious group. However, it seems to me that you people (commentors) are conspiracy theorists. You seem to believe that Obama is America's Stalin. Obama is a typical politician; I don't think he even personally cares that much about abortion. He simply makes it part of his agenda to make the pro-choicers happy. He's not Stalin. He may turn out not to be good for America, but if he's Stalin then Bush was Hitler (which he was most certainly not). Just because the left fell into a habit of demonizing Bush andblaming everything on him doesn't make it right for you to do the same to Obama.
Besides that, it takes not only able leaders but certain circumstances to establish a dictatorship. Do you think the Russian Revolution ever would have happened if Russia was so poor? We may be in a recession but we're still one of thr richest countries in the world. It would take the genius of the millenium to topple the American republic in such a short time, despite how dumb and sheep-like the American people have become.

As an atheist, I will forgive the postings on here that accuse me and those who think like I do of being of the same ilk as Obama. WE ARE NOT! He may be a Muslim, Christian, or Atheist, but I believe the intent here is far more sinister than simply limiting people's religious expressions. Freedom to worship is an ENTIRELY AMBIGUOUS euphemism. It lacks ALL attribution, thus making it possible and an eventuality for the only worship to be permitted to be worship of the state! Freedom of religion at least has the connotation of retaining a person's right to entertain their relationship with god, gods, or no god. Freedom of worship has no such qualifications or implication, leading me to assume that it's intent is devoid of any consideration for worship of god, gods, or no god. This represents a total abrogation of our ability to believe as we will, and nothing short of just that!

So now the Catholic Church is worried about the change in language. Is the progressive movement and Obama in particular supposed to give a rip what upsets the Catholics?

Why should he? You brought this on yourselves. You have supported God knows how many liberal/progressive politicians who are in favor of abortion. The Catholic Church seems to turn a blind eye to the murder of unborn children when it has a political agenda to pursue.

Unfortunately, the agenda the Catholics follow and support is one of Social Justice as in the kind preached by Socialists (ala Barry Obama). The country is heading right into Socialism and the Catholic Church has supported the policies, legislation, and politicians who are taking us there.

Well Catholics, A reduction in religion is required of Socialism as it is on Marxism and Communism because religions and God are removed from society. Those political systems DO NOT believe in God as the state is the only deity.

So while you lament the change in language remember that you brought this on yourselves.

If you had lived up to your Christian responsibilities and opposed this then we would not be discussing the matter.

    Way to go...

If the Church is to survive and continue spreading the Gospel message it must realize and shun the dangers presented by the Obama Administration. Social Justice and collective salvation are anathema to religious freedom and charity towards our fellow man. This president, BHO is not a product of the main stream American culture. It seems the Church fathers in Rome have become aware and vocal of these dangers, now the social activist body must awake as well.

I'm not a catholic. In fact, I find the religion ridiculous and the church outrageous. But at least since the 1400s or so, you Catholics understand that you are a religion and not a sovereign political entity. Therein lies the only difference between the RCC and B. Hussein Obama along with his disciples; they don't admit that they are a religion and pretend that they are only a legitimate political entity. Well the crazy left should have the same right to religious freedom that the Catholics, Muslims, Jews, and Protestants have. They are the "Religion of Man," but are unfairly competing against other religions by pretending to be a political party and forcing unpopular laws against their version of heretics. How is this different than Saudi Arabia, the Taliban, or when the catholic church ran the governments, too?

Thank you, Catholic Online, for this insightful article. Although I'm not Catholic, I, too, as a non-denominational Christian, cherish my freedom of religion. I had not noticed that the president had abandoned that term for "freedom of worship", and frankly, now that I see it, I am very concerned. Language, indeed, for the progressives is weighed and measured out with the exact amount of connotation and denotation to achieve their goals. However, those of us from the various Christian faiths must remember: We serve the Living Word of God made flesh! Guess who IS the Word, Progressives! And take a guess as to who created language in the first place! It's time we take charge again of language and refuse to be lulled into subtle terminology, definition, and language co-opting by those who definitely do not have our best interests at heart.

You stupid catholics pushed for this for at least 50 years or more and now you have it. Like it! I don't think you are smart enought to wake up. Bye bye catholics, bye bye freedom and bye bye America! Thanks alot!!!!

I am a Protestant with the upmost respect for the Catholic Church.
What I don't understand is how so many inteliegent Catholics voted for Obama. The man first says how he plans to destroy us with abortion, gun control, socialism, and other far left values, then there was his Senate record when he was there, his lack of one substantial accomplishment, Larry Sinclair allegations (see you tube for more because this is to filthy to post here), and much more. WHY? WHY? WHY?
