New York Times comes down hard on Internet readers

Under new paywall restrictions, online readers will only get 10 free articles

Bound and determined to mine profits from the burgeoning Internet age, the New York Times newspaper has announced that it will be amping up its paywall guidelines for digital articles. Among the new rules, to take effect next month, will be in allowing non-subscribers to access only 10 free articles before having to pay for content.

The New York Times, which launched its paywall a year ago, has approximately 454,000 paid digital subscribers to various editions of the New York Times and the International Herald Tribune.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - Users of the Times' digital properties in the past were allowed to access 20 free articles. The Times says that the change will "continue to allow for access to a generous amount of free content on the Web site and across multiple digital platforms."

"We knew that readers placed a high value on our journalism, and we anticipated they would respond positively to our digital subscription packages," New York Times Company chairman and CEO Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., says.

"Our commitment to all of our subscribers, both print and digital, is that we will continue to invest in and evolve our journalism and our products, and we will remain a source of trustworthy news, information and high-quality opinion for many years to come."

All users of NYTimes.com will be able to access 10 articles at no charge each month (including slideshows, videos and other forms of content). Beyond 10 articles and for unlimited access* to the site, users will be asked to become digital subscribers.

On The Times' Smartphone and tablet applications, the Top News sections will remain free. To go further into the apps' other sections, users will be asked to become digital subscribers.

Readers who come to Times articles through links from e-mail, search, blogs and social media will continue to be able to access those individual articles, even if they have reached their reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of five free links to Times articles.
