WHEN

"Asian Church identity" began to develop when Pope Paul VI met Asian bishops at Manila in 1970. The FABC (Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences) held its first plenary assembly in 1974. The Pan-Asian Episcopal Conference on Social Communications met that same year in Tokyo and urged "exchange of information" within the Asian Church. UCIP's first Asian meeting (Manila, November 1976) elected a UCIP Coordinator in Asia, who examined the "exchange" concept, surveyed UCIP members and facilitated a process which concluded that a "news agency" model would be best for Asia. In1978, EACPA and SEACPA approved the proposal to start UCA News. Operations began in 1979.

WHY

UCA News exists to report news about and of interest to the Church in Asia.

HOW

Spirit of Service. UCAN editors are professionally qualified. Reporters wishing to help the information needs of the Church receive journalism training from UCA News in their own reporting areas and at UCA News headquarters in Hong Kong and Thailand.

Spirit of Generosity. About one-fifth of the expenses of UCA news are met through subscription income. Allocations from benefactors and donors make up the difference.
