'Sesame Street' YouTube videos replaced with pornography
Hackers behind cyber-attack now under investigation
Wholesome, family entertainment is up for interpretation from some perverted minds. Hackers took control of the "Sesame Street" YouTube page over the weekend, turning the kid-friendly destination into a porno site.
A source within the Sesame Workshop, joked that this is yet another sexual controversy for the program. In April a petition was circulated by viewers asking for Bert and Ernie to have a 'gay marriage'.
A source within the Sesame Workshop, joked that this is yet another sexual controversy for the program. In April a petition was circulated by viewers asking for Bert and Ernie to have a 'gay marriage'.
"Between this and the Bert and Ernie coming-out petitions, it seems everyone wants 'The Street' to teach sex ed," the contact told The Huffington Post.
"Sesame Street" got into trouble for a racy video of pop star Katy Perry wearing a low-cut top during a sing-along with Elmo last year. The clip has since been removed from the show.
Sesame Workshop officials issued an apology in case any impressionable viewers caught a glimpse of skin. "Our channel was compromised and we are presently working with YouTube/Google to restore our original content. We always strive to provide age-appropriate content for our viewers and hope to resolve this problem quickly."
"Sesame Street's" YouTube channel has since been put back online and is currently spreading wholesome, child-friendly messages Monday.
"Our channel was temporarily compromised, but we have since restored our original line-up of the best classic Sesame Street video clips featuring Cookie Monster, Big Bird, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, and the rest of the fuzzy, feathered, and googly-eyed friends you remember from childhood," read a more recent posting.
YouTube issued a brief statement Sunday noting that the Google-owned video site prohibits graphic content and removes inappropriate posts as soon as they become aware of them. A spokeswoman referred to the same statement on Monday.
While fingers began to be pointed towards possible guilty parties in connection with the stunt, various YouTube users were quick to deny any participation. "I did not hack Sesame Street. I am an honest YouTuber," the user, identified as "MrEdxwx," posted on his account. "I work hard to make quality gameplay videos, and most important I respect the community guidelines."
"Sesame Street," a longtime mainstay of children's programming, has been the object of adult parody previously. The hit musical "Avenue Q" took a decidedly adult look at the private lives of puppets. The obscure New Zealand musical comedy "Meet the Feebles" likewise took a jaundiced look at the peccadilloes of puppets, upping the ante with scenes of mass slaughter courtesy of a "Miss Piggy"-like hippo armed with submachine guns.
